Before I start, I know that this type of question gets asked plenty of times throughout the year, and I apologize. I've really been eager to map something recently, but I don't know what to map, exactly. For the past month or so, my think tank has been empty. Where do all of you get the inspiration or incentive to map something? Some people suggest to map the surrounding neighborhood, but there's nothing interesting architecture-wise around here. Does anybody have an unused idea that they are willing to throw at me?

What you may want to do, is, whenever you get an idea, write it down,
or note it in another form like a sketch or so. Often, I'll have idea's
on unexpected moments but I loose them quickly unless I write them down
somehow. And while I may not get around working them out on that very
moment, they may be of use years later.

Anyway, sources of inspiration can be anything, from your daily
environment to books, movies and other games. Talking with other
mappers is also a good way to come up with idea's - you can inspire
each other, some of your idea's may not seem good in your eyes, but
someone else who hears them can mix them up or interpret them in
another way, and get a great idea from it.

Working out these idea's is another thing, and requires planning and
further investigation, but that's another story all together.

It is my experience that inspiration and motivation can be one and the same thing. With that in mind, I would say that the best motivation would be a willingness to listen to ones peers and a commitment to continue doing so no matter how well you become eventually.

Inspiration from these peers can come in the form of ideas. It can come simply in the form of direction, meaning how they direct you upon your course at that time in your career at editing.

Being open to the idea that no matter where you are, or at what stage of development you may be that someone, somewhere has information you can use.

My advice, find some people at or near your current level and buddy up with them. Nothing can be more discouraging than knowing that everyone around you is leagues above you in achievements. Find somebody at or near yourself and "push" each other to greater heights.

I would also suggest that you set your sights low at first. This will give you a better chance of success. I wouldn't set them so low that a killbox is your idea of a map, but almost anything greater will suffice.

Good luck.

The best things in life, aren't things.

I'd agree. After all these years, I have finally realised theres no point in doing something unless your actually gunna finish it. If your not, then its either a waste of time or a lesson learnt!

Wait till you have something due the next day (homework related, job
related, anything) and you'll want to map so badly to avoid the
work. You'll get some great ideas.
