Recently I bought a replacement router since my old one broke shortly before I moved.

My question is 2 fold.
  • Since I no longer have broadband was that a poor choice? Should I have bought a HUB instead?
  • Why can I not get my router to talk to my 2 computers without the broadband? No matter how I set it up, they cannot seem to see each other.
I do like an occasional HL2 LAN game and am dying to play CIV 4 with my son.

I was afraid you'd/someone'd say that. I did. I musta missed something.

I fear that it needs broadband to activate a switch or some s**t.

Aren't there cables that you can use to connect computer to computer without a switch/hub? Two way cables?

Yes there is, and luckily I have a crossover cable. Unfortunately, it is in storage with all the rest of my less essential computer parts. I forgot to keep it out when I packed.

Now, I think my problem lies with the 56k s**t. The modem uses a port, and the IPX cards use another sort. I think my PC is getting confused because it is primarily setup for internet use via the 56k.

My PC acknowledges the router. I can talk to it via the admin function. I cannot get it to talk to both pc's to LAN.

I am unsure why. I am skilled enough because I had my last router setup for DSL and I did the work making it so. I am just confused because now I seem to be less skilled.

The two comps should be able to see each other without a net connection, in any case. What router is it?

OK, let's see. Since crono's not here, i'll pretend that I know what I'm talking about. Forget the net connection.

A hub and router are completely different things... A hub basically
takes frames from one of the ports and sends it to ALL the other ports.
It's up to the receiver to discard what he doesn't want. A router takes
packets from one port, reads them, and then sends it only to the
correct destination port. Anything a hub can do, a router can do better.

Try this:

1)Do both machines have valid IPs?

2)Can you ping one from the other?

1) dunno
2) dunno

What I have done, and can do:

1) each PC can talk to the router. If I go into admin I can set the individual params well enough.
2) I have used both PC's before to talk to the net, albeit with DSL so I am confident they are functioning.
3) My wires work, since I can talk to the router. Same can be said for the IPX cards.
4) Only this PC talks to the net currently since I have 56k and only one machine can talk to the net at any given time it didn't seem prudent to set up both with a 56k modem.
5) I have even opened all the ports via the DMZ in the hopes of getting the machines to converse. Since the router will not see the net with the 56k, opening them was not a concern to a hacking.

I think that about sums up my current position. Does that help?

On both machines, do this:

Open a DOS command window

Run ipconfig

Note the IP address, if any.

Then go to each machine, and try to ping the other machine's IP

e.g. ping 192.168.1.25

See what happens.
