The two comps should be able to see each other without a net connection, in any case. What router is it?

OK, let's see. Since crono's not here, i'll pretend that I know what I'm talking about. Forget the net connection.
A hub and router are completely different things... A hub basically
takes frames from one of the ports and sends it to ALL the other ports.
It's up to the receiver to discard what he doesn't want. A router takes
packets from one port, reads them, and then sends it only to the
correct destination port. Anything a hub can do, a router can do better.
Try this:
1)Do both machines have valid IPs?
2)Can you ping one from the other?

On both machines, do this:
Open a DOS command window
Run ipconfig
Note the IP address, if any.
Then go to each machine, and try to ping the other machine's IP
e.g. ping 192.168.1.25
See what happens.

i had problems with my 56k try deleting it and reconfigure your dial up but tell it not to be the primary connection
