simple problem, I have a map, I compile it, it runs fine. I
compile it the same way, with a small change, still works. Change
it again, compile the same way again, and now hl2 loads but once it
starts to load the map the game crashes with an "Application error"

hammer, restarted computer...

it sounds like it's time to start doing some cordon/entity selective compiling, to find what's causing the error.
saving under a new filename is always a good idea after a succesful compile. that way, it's easy to go back to your last good version.

Found it.
I had an npc_maker that spawned a dropship then "onspawn" I had it trigger the dropship to land.
The input telling the dropship to land crashed hl2.

i am now experiencing this. Map compiles fine and when I try to run it
in hl2dm it crashes on me. In the error report it says 'datacache.dll'.
Also this happened right after a steam update. Coincidence?
