Hello all,

Please forgive me if I have done a very stupid mistake, I am very new to mapping.

I recently got interested in mapping for Sven Coop, so I got Hammer (Valve Hammer Editor, not the source SDK one). I set it up - thanks to your tutorials  and I made a very simple box (I holowed out a cube - don't kill me! it was only for a test!) with one texture, 4 light ents and an info_player_start ent in the middle. I tried running it (f9), but it just abruptly shut down. Hmmmm....I tried it a couple of other ways (exporting to map and then running a MAP->BSP compiler...didn't work). So I got Worldcraft, this time I DID actually get an error message in the compilation log.

Here it is (note - i wiped out my acc name, but there is no @ symbol in it):

** Executing...
** Command: Change Directory
** Parameters: "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\#####\half-life"

** Executing...
** Command: C:\Program Files\Steam\Hammer\hlcsg.exe
** Parameters: "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test"
  • Could not execute the command:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Hammer\hlcsg.exe" "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test"
  • Windows gave the error message:
"The operation completed successfully."

** Executing...
** Command: C:\Program Files\Steam\Hammer\hlbsp.exe
** Parameters: "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test"
  • Could not execute the command:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Hammer\hlbsp.exe" "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test"
  • Windows gave the error message:
"The operation completed successfully."

** Executing...
** Command: C:\Program Files\Steam\Hammer\hlvis.exe
** Parameters: "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test"
  • Could not execute the command:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Hammer\hlvis.exe" "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test"
  • Windows gave the error message:
"The operation completed successfully."

** Executing...
** Command: C:\Program Files\Steam\Hammer\hlvis.exe
** Parameters: "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test"
  • Could not execute the command:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Hammer\hlvis.exe" "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test"
  • Windows gave the error message:
"The operation completed successfully."

** Executing...
** Command: Copy File
** Parameters: "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test.bsp" "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\#####\half-life\valve\maps\test.bsp"

The command failed. Windows reported the error:
"The system cannot find the file specified."

** Executing...
** Command: Copy File
** Parameters: "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\#####\half-life\svencoop\maps\rmfs\test.pts" "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\#####\half-life\valve\maps\test.pts"

The command failed. Windows reported the error:
"The system cannot find the file specified."

** Executing...
** Command: C:\Program Files\Steam\steam.exe
** Parameters: +map "test" -dev -console

That's the compilation for the HALF-LIFE config I made for WorldCraft. I hope you can help me on this.

Cheers in advance

The map borked out from square #1. I am not sure why because there is not report specifically stated.

My advice. Check all your setup screens to make sure you have everything properly set.

Borks of this nature are usually simple path errors. Either it cannot find the map/vmf or you failed to save it to a map or vmf.

Also, they are no longer rmf's so you might want to change the folder to simply "maps"

Check your paths and get back to us.

Ok, I have an update, I did a dumb thing and made the RAD exec the same as the VIS. I fixed that and ithe map ran perfectly in Worldcraft, but it still isn't working in Hammer. I really dont mind if Hammer works or not because WC does. Thanks anyway for the help

Hammer is WorldCraft. What exactly do you mean by its not?

and

A part of my answer was correct, by your own statement. I may have not been totally right but I was trying for a broad answer to help you with.

The setup was wrong.

Why did you mark me red.?

<span style="color: white;">After I looked at the error message in much more detail I found my problem, that was going wrong. It was there, but we both didn't see it until later.

it may be, but I thought that Worldcraft has a sierra.inf file, that must mean that it was made for WON. On the other hand Hammer has a valve.inf file. meaining there should be some connection to Steam.

I'm sorry I marked your answer wrong, but it didn't answer the problem with Hammer.

I wouldn't read too much into what files they may or may not use - they are simply different releases of the same program. Worldcraft was the name used in the earlier versions, but was then (for legal reasons I guess) changed to Valve Hammer Editor. I'd recommend using VHE over WC simply because it is the updated version and includes improvements and bug fixes, though WC is still a perfectly functional program.

I also think that you should persevere into getting VHE working - giving up on getting your editor setup doesn't show very good determination  as Orph said, it sounds like it is something to do with your paths, but it's been ages since I did HL1 mapping or had to concern myself with what a "correct" path should be.

Best of luck getting it working anyway; it's not ideal to have to fall back to an earlier release.
