Alright, I'll just give my little disclaimer that there's nothing illegal with this.

I just got my iPod Video, and I"m trying to put some DVDs of MOnty
Python on it. I'm looking for a program that'll convert DVDs to
something normal like Mpegs or AVIs etc. preferably for free.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Don't they have to be MP4?

You can use a Divx ripping program and either choose a compatable codec from there, or convert it when it's done ripping.

No, I have a good program that takes any file at makes it MP4 blazingly fast, but it won't do DVDs.

I found a DVD-To-Mpeg program that takes forever, and I don't know how
well it'll turn out, but I shall find out in just over an hour.

If you're curious I found this: Handbrake

It rips DVDs directly to MP4, AVI, OGG ... whatever you want if you have an encoding codec available.

There's a stable OSX building ... and a buggy WinXP version ... but people are saying it works alright. You can find that here.

Now, you should be aware this will take hours to do. You have to understand how llarge a DVD is, first off, and realize the fact that the video and audio streams are being converted to another encoding. That takes a lot of time. 2+ hours would not be unusual.

Anyway, there's also a guide here. Give it a try.

I"ll go give that a shot, as this program decided not to tell me that it'll only do half of the file before it makes me pay.

I should note, I'm checking out the Windows version right now, and it's really sub-par. It'll work, but it's barebones, while the functionality is still there, the interface is not the best. But it'll still work, I'm checking it now, from an already backed up dvd (yes, I own it) and it's going to take about an hour and a half.

Also, to run it run "wxHB.exe", since there's no guide or ... hint that that is the interface.

Yeah, I got through all that and now I'm choosing my options. The guide is kinda useless

I'm pretty much using defaults 'cause I'm afraid to touch anything
And I'm using XviD codec 'cause it's the only one I recognize

Just started it, and so far it's doing nothing...

EDIT: OKay, it's doin somethin. ETA is 2 and a half hours...

RE-EDIT: ETA spiked to over 3 hours, but it's already at 4% complete...
so either I can't do math or whoever made that ETA thing sucks.

Well, don't try to rip your DVD directly to MP4, then.

There are thousands of guide on the net on how to backup DVD's to Divx, Xvid or whatever format you like.

Personally, I use DVDx to rip my DVD's to DivX. (Good guides at www.doom9.org)

Well, the program Crono suggested does work, and sends it right to mp4, albeit quite slowly.

I just ripped Live at Slane, maybe I'll try a different program for the next one and decide which one I like more.

It goign to take a while no matter what program you use. It has to first decrypt the DVD, then encode it. So depedning on what type of computer you have it could take 20-30 minutes to decrypt the DVD alone, and then it has to encode a 1+ hour movie, which could take hours.

I'm going to try ForceFlows suggestion for sure, the other program made
the video look so ugly. Hopefully I won't be able to tell on such
a small screen, but it's ugly.

Problem is I've never heard of any of these programs, I'm trusting your judgement

And ForceFlow, that DVDx thing is stupid. It says everywhere that
it's freeware, but I have to pay $33 USD to download anything.

EDIT: Okay, did some searching and found a free version.

EDIT AGAIN: Curses, it can't read the disk... neither can the other program... methinks it's protected or something...

Ripping to divx takes an hour or so too ... then you have to convert it to MP4 ... which takes another 30 minutes or so, in most cases.

and iPod's resolution specification is 320x240. So, of course it'll look like ass on your computer which has an enomous resolution in comparison. I don't know if iPod has any built in video smoothing either, so it's very possible it will look fantastic when everything is all said and done.

Ah, as I suspected the video looks fine on my computer. Not
super-duper highest quality, but better than most of the stuff I
have. Plus there's no audio-sync problems

If you are on broadband downloading the video may take less time than ripping it, and on uni networks downloading is in fact much much faster.

I was gonna suggest this site but ForceFlow beat me to it.

I quoted it just in case anyone else wants a second opinion. In fact, I pointed Mazemaster to this site recently for his roadtrip movie. I assume it helped him too.

Anyway, Doom9 is a great reference site.
