had japan not pulled that stunt, america would IMO have waited to long to enter the war, the UK would have fallen and its resources added to the chaos that was know as the german army.
Hitler declaired war on the US when he heard about their war with Japan... which was quite a while before Pearl Harbour? Apparently the president got some phone call saying that Germany had declared war on the US, and he used this as an excuse to send extra stuff to help the UK out in the war... So from where I see it, it was Hitler who ensured the extra help Britain got from the US by declaring war on the US when it posed no direct threat. But yeah, what Gwil said

lots of people, have been told, or have slightly off thinking about WW2

there was a sort of cold war going on with japan back then, many mix that up with when the war was actually declared.

the US had been keeping a tight watch on Japan due to its Manchurian campaign, where they had slaughtered chinese by the thousands....that is why the bulk of the US surface fleet had been moved to Pearl, as an "invasion" had been anticipated....talk about getting caught with yer pants down....they had made it clear that "US imperialism" was a target...

waiting on the retorts....***stands firm , fists in air....

Actually I was just going to say how ironic they'd target Americas imperialism as a negative force when Japan at that time couldn't have been more Imperial...

i find it simply amazing, that a book was written about a hypothetical attach on pearl, quite a while before it actually occurred, it was summarily discredited, by those that know, to their collective chagrin.

it was my understanding that the book, became sort of a bible/guide/plan for the attach.

if anyone had taken it seriously the attach would have been thwarted easily, BUT then theres the conspiracy theory that say, IT WAS taken seriously, by the prez. and ignored in favor of our joining the war.

he knew the American people would not join without some overwhelming incident to press them into service.

as i said, the mindset back then was, the war is over there, we got enuff troubles of our own.

Thats quite freaky really :O of course, if America hadn't have gotten involved in the European conflict, most of Europe would have been inside the Soviet Bloc :/ WIth maybe France liberating itself... scenarios, scenarios!

I believe the story is, the day that Roosevelt was going to make a proposal to Congress for a declaration of war, Germany declared war on them just a few hours before they would have done so.

By the way Jeff, my mouth was loud the whole time.

Wow, you fellas sure know your history. I never enjoyed history in school, now I wish I'd taken a greater interest.

That said, I think I'm still entitled to an opinion, however ill-informed it may be. As I see it, the European allies fought most of the war, but the US finished it. Without US intervention, I think we'd have lost. Just a shame they couldn't turn up sooner. So many men died, it's terrible. I wonder how many didn't have to? Would we have had the same losses with the overwhelming American forces behind us? Or could we have forced a surrender sooner?

Wow. I need to visit here more. Ya'lls opinions are for the most part better researched and better reasoned than those at other forums *cough*vlatitude*cough*.

good job

edit: Oh, and as for an opinion of my own...

Hmm...

I'm not sure whether europe would have lost the war with or without us. I do remember hearing something about germany making it's own atomic bombs, that actually were supposed to be ready shortly they were defeated... and they had the technolgy to hit england with their rockets... I don't know how true that is, as I have also read that the German nuclear bomb program was pretty much a failure. So meh.

PS: Is my avatar bothering people? Just say the word it goes.
