So I downloaded the XSI ModTool and here already came the first problem: "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The exectuatble has been corrupted... Please optain another copy of the file..."
Alright I thought, the downloader messed up the file. So I downloaded the installer a second time, even from a different source. The exact same problem.
Soooo... I turned the Computer off. Next day, out of curiosity and a bit of frustration I click the installer again. The old one. Suddenly it works. But on installing certain files it gives me CRC errors. So I give up... and re-download the installer a 3rd time, this time from the official site again. Result: "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked...". Maybe my HD is broken, I don't know. But I downloaded a lot of installers in the last few weeks and never happened anything similar. The last time I got a corrupt installer was about 8 months ago and the result of a system crash while downloading.
Sooo.... after another day of angryness I click the second installer I downloaded. And guess what - it works now. It can install the whole thing. It gives me an error, too but this time it's about a jpg in the help files so I hope the best. And on clicking XSI on my desktop it starts, I see the starting window with the apple juice flower but... nothing else happens. I wait for half an hour. No program window shows up. The whole thing crashes before it even starts.
Uhm... any suggestions?

I might check out Blender some time soon but right now, right now I want to get XSI to start. Just on principle. I downloaded over 600 MB of install files and I want to get a glimpse on the program at least
[edit] omg, I didn't know the ": E" smiley's a devil here but it fits this time ^^[/edit]

Everything apparently succeeded
Gah, that's annoying. Is anyone else having trouble installing XSI?

Now I downloaded the installer a fifth time. To another harddisk because I figured it could be broken. Again a file error. Where did you download you copy from, French Toast? Maybe the one on the XSI site is broken? Would be ridiculous but I'm running out of ideas.
EDIT:
something I found searching the web. Seems like certain anti-virus prorams can cause this "error when you try to open a download they have filtered to protect your PC from unknown, unrecognized, and/or "potentially harmful" file downloads"
hmmmmmm

So are you going to disable your anti-virus and try and install it?

No already did that.
In fact, I think I found my problem. My RAM has some error. I checked it with one of those internet tools and put in my old (error free) 512 MB stick. The files still give me the "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The exectuable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of the file, verify it's integrity, and try again" error but the two files that actually load don't give any random file missing errors anymore. It still doesn't work but hopefully I can get a clean download now.
Downloading the same file from different sources with different downloaders on different harddisks and getting the same error all the time brought me to the idea to check my ram. Hopefully the warranty holds.

You really want to model something don't you
I hope that fixes it.

I was just going to suggest that after reading your first posts.
I had a bad stick of RAM for almost a year, it caused all sorts of trouble.. you should get it replaced ASAP. Files will work erratically (Errors sometimes, or sometimes things just work).. you might get corrupted stuff.. things won't install right sometimes (especially if they're big).. etc. Replace it or at least don't put it back..

Stadric, thanks a lot, I will try that. For some reason i still doesn't work but I downloaded an error less installer at least.
I'm glad I have an extra stick of RAM I can use. I bought the new stick about half a year ago because I thought my old one was making troubles. Tourned out to be the other way round ^^. It's a good Kingston 1 GB stick. I thought I'm on the safe side buying a more common brand but my old no-name stick works perfectly while the new one is seriously damaged.

I gave up on XSI, learning Blender instead. First model imported already
I hope to be able to join the competition soon.

Too bad about XSI, but I'm glad you found an alternative
