A few days ago I got a PM from Addicted to Morphine suggesting me to post about last.fm to let all new snarkpit members know about this neat site. I made a post about this quite a while ago, so now I'm making another one so that all new members can discover, and old members rediscover it.

So, what is last.fm?

Last.fm is a service that records what you listen to, and then presents you with an array of interesting things based upon your tastes ? artists you might like, users with similar taste, personalised radio streams, charts, and much more.

You can see your weekly and overall listening habits presented in neat charts based on songs, artists or albums among many other things. Here's an example of the ten most recent tracks I've listened to:


Another thing I like is that you can listen to selected tracks by most artists, which is very nice if you want to know what that artist sounds like before buying or downloading those tracks. Also, you can see what others that are registered listen to.

All you need to do is downloading the plugin for your favorite music player and install it. Then you can forget about it, the rest will happen by itself.

I've also created a snarkpit group at last.fm, which means all of you can join this group and easily see what the others listen to. So far 28 snarkpitters have registered. Stats will also be generated for the group itself. Now download the plugin, register for the snarkpit group, and start playing music!

Yup, I really enjoy that site. It's just fun to track what you listen to, and it's easy to use. There's also a link to an iPod plugin that you can download that tracks songs played and updates last.fm with the information when you sync your iPod.

I just thought I'd mention you don't need to use iTunes to use audioscrobbler/last.fm. You can download the plugin for windows media player, winamp, and all sorts of other programs. Or you can just download the standalone software that lets you take full advantage of the site specific, music related features.

OK, so I downloaded the last.fm client application. It's a small thingymabob that basically autodetects which mediaplayers you have and lets you select which ones you want to download plugins for. Then, it installs that for you, and you're good to go. I decided to try out the last.fm client because it looked like it has some cool features, namely band biographies and similar artist listings.

Everything fits.
I like how it only adds songs to your scobble (sic) list when you really listened to it (1/2 of song lenght) rather than loading up every song you unintentionally clicked or skipped.

I just threw down 3 bones for subscriber status... simply because I wanted to see who was stalking me.
