The next line in the guide reads:
$texrendermode "hedgehog_test.bmp" "masked"
So you will want to set the "<rendermode>" to "masked" to get masked transparency.

yes, i know i have to change that to "masked" but....
i was wondering why the model compiled but transparency didn't work: i forgot the $ sign.
now it says:
************ ERROR ************
bad command $texrendermode
i'm using MilkShape, should i use another program or something?

I'm guessing Milkshape's model compiler uses an older version of studiomdl. You should go with fishy's suggestion.

is it me or old hl engine doesn't support transparency on models?
i test my maps on the old hl because it's faster and i don't need steam to run it, but the models didn't look transparent. i ran the map on steam hl and transparency worked.
so, thanks again fishy!

if your install is fresh from an old half-life cd, then it won't support the transparency. older versions of some mods don't support it either, but it works in the most recent [non-steam] tfc, dod, cs or probably loads of others. maybe you could try running your map in one of those,...though that wouldn't be any good for testing entity setups.

i use the last version of the old engine, 1.1.1.0 but i think i accidentally messed up some files, for example, the console background is cs's (not the dark gray bg with the lambda l symbol in the middle-bottom), do you know how to change it? i can't find the file. i'd reinstall the game but too lazy, and it's just models transparency (and console bg). at least i know it works.

You need the DoD model transparency dlls (hw.dll, sw.dll). Should be a DL out there somewhere, Google it.
