Since it has been decided here that MP3's aren't really theft I'd like to discuss books. If however someone feels there is a difference in types of MP3's, I'd like to hear that too.

Most of us read, and/or listen to audio books. I have a few, some of good to excellent quality. Would anyone be interested in starting a Snarkpit general library? Non-profit of course.

Sharing MP3s is illegal, unless you own the rights to those MP3s. The same applies to audio books. You really shouldn't be discussing sharing your MP3s on here Orph; you know Lep's stance on the matter.

You see, there's that fuzzy line again. In for an ounce, in for a pound.

The very act of possessing an MP3 that you have no right to have, is no different than sharing one. The law was broken, in both cases.

I know you think its a lesser evil, but I do not. Its the same evil, with a different connotation.

However, I bow to your decision.

I will point out however, that discussing a wrong, is NOT the same as doing it. If we mention 2,500 audio books between us, and only share them privately, shrugs

As long as I do not actually post a link to said books, Leps rule isn't crossed.

I do agree with you to a point mate, but that said I just don't want to in any way suggest that the Snarkpit is a haven for the illegal sharing of files. There are many means to go about getting media files you desire, but none of the staff here, including Lep, want to see The Snarkpit becoming one of them.

If you want to start some sort of library for sharing audio books then I'm not in any position to stop you, but please don't associate it with the Snarkpit in any way.

sighs

In a single years time Duncan, I spot and prevent more illicit file sharing here than most. Prolly not more than you, but thats prolly only because I noticed before you and, took care of it for you.

MOST have direct linking to a program or file that is obviously borrowed. This, is wrong. At least it goes against a policy that this site upholds as wrong.

Discussing borrowed content is just way OTT. I'm sorry. I agree with Leps policy of not promoting, but I will not adhere to the thought police mentality.

Notice, I said Snarkpit general library. Not Public. Semantics? Prolly. But no more or less than music and book MP3's collecting. Which I guarantee that there are 100's, if not 1,000's of songs on most of our machines.

No one would ever be aware that we're doing anything, unless someone pointed it out.

Anyway, this topic pretty much stalled out because of our discussion thus far so, its prolly moot now anyway.

As far as the books go, I am confident that I have more gigs worth already, than anyone here so the library would be at my house. Better known as: "Snarkpit General Library" - care of member #8.
