Anyways thanks in advance for taking your time to read this. I've been an on and off reader of these forums for quite sometime (got into wow so i dont have the time to map like i used to =P) and I thought I might try to seek some help here since I didnt get a response on steams official forums, not to mention from my readings, there are quite a few knowledgeable folks that surf these forums. But anyways to get to the problems....

Problems:
-When starting steam I get un-closable tasks on my task bar that have just the steam icon on them, can?t right click on them, when I click on them no windows come up.
-No news can be displayed just continues loading until I close the window.
-After I configure my map editor for a game I can no longer select a game configuration from the drop down menu, just a sliver pops up as if there are no items in the menu, and thus i cannot start hammer.
-When I refresh the server list the UI for the server list lags, all the servers pop up as quickly as normal however it takes forever to click on the check boxes type in map names and select items from the drop menus.

Notes:
-This happened after I reinstalled steam (removed because I wasn?t playing cs much anymore)
-All the ports required by steam have been forwarded.
-I have done complete re-installs removing the files from my program folder and removing regedit entries.
-I have tried re-installing on another partition.
-My computer in the last 3 months has had 2 pieces of add ware detected by avg and about 3 pieces detected by spybot, all of which were removed.
-A friend of mine suggested the issue may be due to me running 32bit windows on my 64bit processor but I find this very unlikely since this worked perfectly months ago with the same hardware/os.
-Also this doesn?t have an effect on my games what so ever so it?s not underpowered hardware. Main reason I even want to fix it is that I can?t get the map editor to work since I can?t select a game configuration.

Have you ran the games before trying to select a game in the SDK menu? Anyway, only thing I can think of would be a Steam update that messed up things for you, given the intangible nature of software that has to run on many different systems. Have you tried searching through the Steam troubleshooting site, or asking on their forums?

After i configure hammer for the first time I can no longer select a game from the drop menu like i described when i try to select from the menu theres just a tiny sliver as if there are no items to select from the menu and thus why i cant select a configuration.

I also attempted using applaunch in shortcuts to launch hammer without steam however hammer doesnt seem to have an id, tried about 10 number in order after the id for the sdk itself since that seems to be the pattern for other games.

And yes i've been on the official forums with not a single reply. I've tried looking thru the troubleshoot though i cant seem to find a match for my problems. Googled it though im not sure my searches have been sturctured well enough to come upw ith a good result, though i normally dont have a problem finding solutions to my tech issues.

I'll be trying to find solutions for a couple more days then i may just format and try again.

However is there a way to run steam without it updating?

I think Capt.P asked if you'd ran any games, because after a fresh install of steam you need to play the game/mod at least once for some sort of configuration file to be written before you can map for it.

I'm not sure about the rest, but I can assure you running 32 bit Windows on a 64 bit processor has nothing to do with your Steam problems. It's what I'm running, and I just upgraded from a single core 64 bit to a dual core 64 bit; no problems... (XP sp 2)

Maybe if you delete the "ClientRegistry.blob" file; that may fix some of the "no news page" or the server list lag problems. But each time you do delete the ClientRegistry.blob file, you'll need to do what Fishy and Captain P suggested In order to see your games in the SDK again.

The .blob file is located directly within the Steam folder.

I'm also running 32 bit WinXP on a 64bit processor, just to rule out that point. That's all the help I can give

Just tried the blob idea, news still doesnt load and i still recieve the server lag. I think im just gonna format my comp and see if theres some odd underlying issue but thanks for all the responses they have been appreciated.
