telling us what the error report said would probably be a good place to start.

When i start up either face poser or the model veiwer, these error reports pop up. I dont know if these stupid error reports will mean anything. Hammer works fine.

hlfaceposer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Error signature-

AppName: hlfaceposer.exe

AppVer: 0.0.0.0

ModName: shaderapidx9.dll

ModVer: 0.0.0.0

Offset: 0001141a

hlmv.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Error signature-

AppName: hlmv.exe

AppVer: 0.0.0.0

ModName: shaderapidx9.dll

ModVer: 0.0.0.0

Offset: 0001141a

I have tried reinstalling Source sdk, refreshing sdk content, resseting game content, trying a different game to use instead of hl2, and it seems like im the only person in the world with this problem.

if you're using the drivers that came with the card, then i'd be very very surprised if they were the latest, or even close to it.

damn, you really tried everything now.

What I can tell you is that you're probably not the only person on the world who has the problem. I vaguely remember hearing about this before. Try googling some, with all kinds of keywords.

And if you find something it would be very cool of you to come back and tell us (- and people looking for the same fix in the future). Well,... if.
Why snark works.

Your question might be answered here: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Help_Desk
[specifically here (faceposer and HLMV crash in widescreen resolution)]
If not ask it, you might get an answer from the people who actually work on the programs.

You also might try updating to the latest version of DirectX (Aug 2007).

Hope that's of help to you.

Baron von Snickers, I love you. I followed the the link you gave me and and found a nother link here:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=562221&highlight=faceposer

This is a post i found at that link above:

This what I posted on the VERC:

I had an ATI Radeon x1600 video card that died. So I got a new ATI Radeon x1950 PRO. When I tried to run the Model Viewer or Face Poser, they would both crash with shaderapidx9.dll.

I googled everything dealing with shaderapidx9 which included fixing any WMI errors, reinstalling Directx 9, etc. Nothing worked. One solution listed was to reformat and install Windows XP again. I have my maps and graphics on another partition and it had been a while since I had redone Windows XP so I gave it a shot. It would still crash even after a fresh install.

I noticed that the resolution in my games looked odd. I'm running a 19 in. CRT at 1024x768 which is what I play my games at. My Steam games were defaulted to 1280 resolution. Even though I changed my resolution in the games to 1024x768, the Model View and Face Poser would still crash.

So I remember a file in the bin directory called dxsupport.cfg. I searched for "ATI Radeon x1950" and found the default resolution was set at 1280 but my desktop resolution was set at 1024x768. So I changed all the lines for the x1950 from "DefaultRes" "1280" to "DefaultRes" "1024". Lo and behold it worked! I can now run both the Model Viewer and Face Poser without either of them crashing

I hope this information helps anybody who has had this problem and maybe they won't have to go through the hell I went through.

****

So make sure your DESKTOP resolution is the same as the one in the dxsupport.cfg, otherwise I would change all references in the dxsupport.cfg to support your DESKTOP resolution for your video card. It would be interesting to know when you click the "click here" option on the error box what information it collected which should show you what caused the crash.

The thing that was wrong and caused my faceposer and model veiwer to crash was the resolution. I never changed my desktop resolution, i kept it at 1280x800. The only thing i changed was the DefaultRes 1280 to DefaultRes 1024 in the file dxsupport.cfg which is loccated in your C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\*******\sourcesdk\bin or where ever you have steam installed.
