Okay guys, I've been trying to fix this issue for about 2 days now and I'm getting nowhere.

I've got a map for TF2 that has a crapton of custom models and textures in it. Now, I compile the map-- works just fine. I start a server with its giant .res file. Someone joins the server that has never played the map before. After they download it and a large amount of custom vtf and vmt, it says the map file differs from the server. I've seen other people complain about this issue, but usually they have a different map version causing the problem.

So, I thought maybe the .res file is fouled up; I tried giving him both the models and materials folders directly and he still got the "bsp differs from server" error. However, he CAN create his own server with the map and it runs perfectly, and of course, if I try to join it says "map differs from server".

Can something else cause this? Some strange map error that allows people to start servers with the map yet bars anyone from joining? I've also tried embedding the model and material data in the bsp. No luck. I've tried another tf2 map with less custom content, and it actually works.

Isn't it true that even without any of the custom textures and model files, someone could still be able to join a server as long as their bsp matches? Granted everything would be pink, but they'd still be able to join... right?? Where am I going wrong here? What's the proper way to host a server with a map that has a heavy amount of custom content?

YEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if you packed all the custom content into a single BSP or not. If you didn't - use a program like packrat to compress all the custom data into the single BSP file.

That's the proper way to distribute custom content loaden maps. Try if you didn't already. If this isn't it I'm out of ideas.
Why snark works.

If I send them the bsp file embedded with all the model and material data, they can each start their own server with it. The models and materials show up correctly-- no pink stuff. However, whenever anyone tries to join a server with this map running, it says "differs from server" despite the opposite being true.

What kind of bizzaro map problem would allow people to host on a listen server, but keep people from joining????????

Oh, and by the way, we can play with each other if we use different maps, like 2fort or well. Seems my map is the only one that "locks out" anyone from joining.

I've started seeing this a bit since the updates, is your server Linux?

I tried running dm_cannon on my linux server and got the same thing, I PM'd Radon, he was going to try some workarounds, maybe give him a shout.
