I have read the tutorial on how to add a custom texture and have followed it to the letter. I did the process with three different textures even making a checklist to see that everything is in order. My custom files are not showing up in hammer editor.

I have my .vtf and .vmt files in a sub folder under hl2 materials. My sdk directory is set for hl2. The texture is 512 by 512. my vmt files is properly typed:

"LightmappedGeneric"
{
"$basetexture" "spacebackground/spacebackground"
}

ive also tried it two other ways suggested from two other websites.

has there been some major overhaul since the orange box release?
if there is an obvious mistake PLEASE point it out. ive been at this for 4 hours.
if you need more info just ask.

thx soo much :smile: .

Sounds like you did things perfectly...For some reason, all of my custom textures have now disappeared over the weekend. They are in the correct folders and were working perfectly until this weekend. Something may be up with SDK as I have noticed that all of the respawnable explossive barrels are now gone and replaced by a kooky looking guy who says they are obsolete. Hopefully this will get sorted out soon.

I'm having issues with trying to make the game see a custom .vmt for a stock texture, may be related

One other thing I have noticed...I am pretty much mapping for HL2:deathmatch and sometimes when I bring up hammer it reverts to HL2 (SP). So when I bring up my deathmatch map...all my custom stuff is gone because it's looking in another folder for the files. So I just restart Hammer back in Deathmatch mode...and all is well.

Yeah been having a similar problem, reverting to CSS tho I never map for that.

I've reinstalled everything on a new windows install for game performance reasons, but my custom vmt is still not being read

I just started to fool around with a HL2 single player maps and noticed that none of my custom textures from HL2 - Deathmatch show... So I copied them into the HL2 (Materials) directory and walla! They were all there again. I guess HL2 and HL2 Deathmatch are pulling textures (and other resources) from their own respective folders. Maybe that will help ya!

Cheers,
