Now that I've graduated and gotten a job (hell of a last semester), becoming part of the eager workforce and creating myself some disposable income, I'm looking for ways to keep myself busy in the evenings.
I'm wondering how many TF2 mappers out there would be interested in a server to time share with others for map playtests. I tried to do something like this with my HL2DM server before I turned it into a TF2 server, but nothing ever came of it. Just looking for what kind of demand there is out there.
I also need to decide if I want to bite the "several hundred dollar a month dedicated server" bullet or stay with shared hosting, and I think the response I get here will play a big role in that.

As long as i had a map of mine running on it or a rcon password I'd be willing and happy to chip in a few dollars. In fact i imagine if you petitione just a few mapping communities you would get a number of people wanting to get their map on a server and i bet the be willing to pay $5 to $10 a month to do so.
I don't know why you would want to pay hundreds of dollars a month for a dedicated server if all it would be to you is a hobby. If you have a server to yourself can you run more than one server on it at once? Can you run more than one game on it at once? Say one server running Counter Strike Source and One TF2. If so than i can imagine you making your money back by charging to have their map running on the server.
Reality has become a commodity.

Erm, well the idea wouldn't be to charge people to have their map running. I'd take donations for sure, but charging leads down a road to were sub-par maps are put in the rotation just because they were paid more for.
Anyway, yes, a dedicated box would allow me to host something around 50 or 60 slots on an source dedicated server. I could divide those up between whatever source games, or other games (CoD4 anyone?) I wanted. It's something I'd have to tweak, resource division between the more popular servers and what not. In the end, I think I'd end up with three or four servers running.
Another benefit is that I could take down one of those and run my personal website from the server, too. Thus eliminating slower-than-stone Powweb from the equation, and opening up more possibilities for server to website scripts (stats and so forth).
The downside, of course, is the cost.

I'd be interested in running a TF2 server with you but unfortunately all of my money gets ploughed into this place at the moment. If you have any questions about servers though, I might be able to help as i've run a couple in the past.

The baron of bad news? Is that really how you think that phrase goes? Wow.
