I'm thinking about starting a new snarkpit tradition where every Thursday (in my time zone thanks) I create a poll, we'll see how long this lasts....

Anyway, this topic is probably old and been done before, but I thought it would be interesting to see what video game genres you guys like. You need to vote your most favorite (yes, you have to choose one :evil: ) genre.

We can also discuss what genre you hate if thats your thing.

At this point in time, my favorite genre is FPS. Its just something I can ease into and play mindlessly, and a genre that in combination with awesome story, gameplay and sweet ambiance, I really enjoy. And I really enjoy the multiplayer side of FPS games aswell, its great fun!

I love RTS games followed closely behind. I'm only good at a narrow range of RTS games, but its really great, and I love playing people and learning new strategies and stuff... watching an RTS game against two or more really good players is pretty awesome too. The thing with an RTS game though is that they really drain you mentaly, usually after an online Age of Empires game with a few folks I'm pretty tired.

... So, whats your favorite/s?

My favorite is actually simulations, believe it or not. Course that isn't an option on the poll... :razz:

X-Wing
TIE Fighter
Mechwarrior 2
Sim City 2000
IL2 Sturmovik

They require intelligence and quick reaction. Too bad they don't really make them any more.

Least favorite is MMOs, because they are all stupid garbage either by design or through their community and they all are a huge waste of potential. Nothing makes me madder about video games than thinking about WoW.

Ah, I didn't have enough space for simulators. But I used to really love playing Train simulator, I used to make my own routes for hours and download all the custom rolling stock. And I don't mind the occasional Sim City 3000 unlimited, its more fun to play without cheats, and with disasters turned on :wink: .

I actually have a general disliking for MMO's too, but I can understand why people get hooked. But there is one thing that I dislike even more, possibly hate. If anybody plays Warcraft III, you may know what DotA is, all my friends like it and its really popular on the interwebs, but I hate it, its a waste of time and is boring and pointless!

I suppose I should plump for FPS but beyond Half Life (maybe Unreal Tournament / Q3A) I don't really go out my way to play the latest titles. Truer to form would be RTS as I was C&C junkie, as well as Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, Company of Heroes and a bucketload of others. If you can stretch RTS to include Civilisation (not really) it would make more sense as my choice.

So therefore I vote RTS.

I chose FPS because I find that they are the easiest to conform to story-telling. That-is, they may not be the easiest to create, but they can tell a story like no other game genre. Because of that potential, I LOVE playing single player FPSs. I enjoyed the heck out of the Call of Duty 4 sp campaign over its multiplayer side (although, that was fun too).

I had to count to make sure, because I almost have the same number of RTS games at my side too. I absolutely love RTSs and enjoy the strategy parts about them too. my first computer game I ever bought was the original Age of Empires, and since then, I bought every version that came out and made many custom maps for AOE II. I even recorded my voice for characters and stuff to create a single player campaign. I guess you could say that was my first taste of game design :biggrin: ! I'm still waiting for the Asian Dynasties expansion to come down in price.

I also am a big fan of Civilization, and am also waiting to buy the Beyond the Sword Expansion as well. Besides those, I love the Caesar series of games. It's a shame that the Caesar IV game doesn't run as smooth as it should. They spent so long making it and it runs terribly unless you have a beefed up system. My 8800 GTS struggled a little when panning out even with the fog clipping pane activated. But if you download a couple of updates it runs a bit better.

I too was a big Sim City 2000 player, but never played any of them beyond that (I still have the box!)

Also liked the RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 and played a lot of 3 too; those are fun simulation games.

Some other RTSs I play or have played a lot of (and own):
Empire Earth;
Pharaoh;
Homeworld series;
Rise of Nations;
Black and White;
Command and Conquer Generals & C&C 3

And I also absolutely LOVE the whole Myst/Riven series of games, with Riven being probably one of my most favorite games ever(in case you haven't guessed yet :razz: ) Tis a shame they finished off the series. I hope there will be more from Cyan.

civ4 is 4X genre

I'd have to say that my favorite is FPS, followed pretty closely behind with RTS and RPG in a tie, with 4X, simulations(both space and MW), and citybuilders around there too.

Riven: Asian Dyanasties is worth it, nothing at all like the fail that was the original AoE3 SP campaigns. Also, beyond the sword is pretty good.

Also, I'd have to say my alltime favorite city-builder game is Caesar 3, followed by the original Pharaoh. While Tilted Mill has made a good couple of games, they really didn't impress me enough to like them more than Caesar 3.
Signature? What signature!?

Well I love playing FPS, but I do suck at them, I like games with more of a story so I will play an RPG too, but I seem to play many a genre, I will play FPS, RPG, RTS (ohh they pwn me they do), Racing, and I have dabbled in MMO (runescape :sad: ).

I do love sandbox games as well, I just like the freedom you get openworld games are great for that reason, you can g o anywhere in the game without having to do anything, but I still like FPS just because most are such fast paced its just exciting to play.
