I downloaded a wav file that I want to use in my map but I don't know how to use it. Where would you put the file? If it has anything to do with the mod file where would you find that at?

Thanks for your help.

The place of the sound files is half-life\valve\sound .If you want to ass it to the map,use ambient_generic.
If the sond will be for a mod,the place will be half-life\<mod_floder_name>\sound.But if when compilig the maps are going in to half-life\valve\maps,put the soud file in half-life\valve\sound if you want to work on the map.

I tried to put the sound file in Half-life/valve/sound but there is no section named sound. It ends at Half-life/valve. So where would I put the file at? Thanks.

Sounds need to be placed in half-life/valve/sound, if no sound folder exists, than you can create one.

If you need more information, go here.

When the sound file is in the sound folder what would you enter into the ambient_generic WAV name?

Would it work just to add the sound file to the pak0 file instead of half-life/valve/sound and then just use the sound file like you would with the sounds that come with the game?

Say for example, you but hello.wav into half-life/valve/sound, in the ambient_generic under 'WAV name', you would put simply 'hello.wav'. If you put the sound in the folder ambiance, then for 'WAV name' you would add 'ambiance/hello.wav'.

Whats the point in that? If you wanted to distribute the map, you would need to include the pak0.pak file, and thats just silly. Playing a sound in a pak0 is the same, I repeat T H E S A M E as playing a sound in the valve/sound folder.
