I was trying to make the env_sun look more like the moon.. as we dont have a env_moon option for my map.. and I was wondering if any of you have a moon sprite, I think I can use the env_sun thing if I had a moon sprite to make glow.

If you have any ideas let me know.

I just went through this.

Check the dm_shipshape map thread for some screens.

http://www.snarkpit.net/index.php?s=forums&f=2&t=7971&tp=20

down at about jul 19th.

( I can\\\\'t get those links to copy to here ...)

Basically I ended up placing the moon into the skybox texture; it solves any sprite-related anomalies while introducing its own issue, namely the engine will distort it the farther away you turn from it. It only appears perfect looking straight-on. But, after wrestling with other options, I feel it is the lesser of the evils.

PS by sprite anomalies I mean it\\\\'s overbright and doesn\\\\'t appear behind geometry in a natural way.

I'm sorry I can't recall the map atm, but I remember seeing a very large detailed moon that (to me) looked like it was a texture of the moon put into the 3D skybox and blown up 16 times its size. It was very convincing. And If it were me, I would have added a very large but very faint env_sprite in front of it to make it 'glow.'

my two cents :/

Well I got the effect I was after took lots of moving the env_sun around to get it matched with the skybox. but I did it.. and here it is. Would you like me to upload this little test map so you can see it first hand?

DL it here: MOON LIGHT TEST

Wow; I always wondered how long it would take to match up an env_sun in that skybox. Or to any skybox for that matter. If I ever use a Valve skybox and decide to add an env_sun entity in there, I always look at this page which always has the values to put into the map in order for the environmental lighting to look right.

That moon looks very spooky. All it needs now is some scary fog and clouds passing in front of it!

-Good stuff!

I wish I knew how to do the Clouds or fog. Heck I still cant get that dang light glow in my maps.. I have read tuts, and still its not working for me. I need a red sprite or glow around a light.. and I cant get that effect still with the blinding light effect when you look into it. But I'll keep trying.

Yeah thats a good page found that tonight when looking for cartoon skyboxes. Where are skyboxes stored to yang them and do what you said above?
