My kid was watching videos on youtube and he clicked on one and he got a virus warning message... he clicked ok.. and wham-O. He freaked, because as soon as he did, 40 million pages of porn opened up. So he shut the PC off, and restarted it, when it came back up it had no start button or any icons on the screen.. and a little virus warning above the clock, when clicked took you to a virus site. I tried to get rid of it all by booting in safe mode, but it seems to have over written some files in windows and I could not repair it. So I just spent the better part of the morning, formatting, and reinstalling winblows, and steam and the tools and all that. I am so glad I uploaded the map to here.. now I just have to figure out how to decompile it from the bsp and get back to work.

Because I am worried about this crap now.. I went upto Wal*Mart and got a 2gb flash stick just to stick my maps and related stuff relating to them on it, so I wont have to worry about this again.

Dont worry the version you have on here is prior to the fizzle.. and I am back up and running again... clean and clear.

So be careful with youtube..

Ummm.. about that.., don't think you can actually decompile a bsp and get an accurate vmf.

Anyways, I got a virus on friday, and I don't take any chances, I just reformat streight away. I have a 160gb portable hdd which I have all my stuff on, so all I had to do was backup steam which took about an hour and I was good to go, I suggest you get yourself a portable HDD and back up regualry all your stuff, copy your maps to it everyday or week or whatever, too many things can go wrong and you can loose all your data.

Worth a try, you have nothing to lose.

At least your machine will be nice and fast for awhile anyway

Decompiling a map doesn't give you an exact replica of the original .vmf file. Although, vmex is probably the best at it. You'll find small discrepancies here and there, such as grouped items won't be grouped anymore. func_details made up of several brushes will become all stand-alone func_details. That goes for other multiple-brush entities. Sometimes, properties and coordinates for point_entities will change and even the I/O system will be changed, so you may have a little more work ahead of you than expected if you have to decompile your own BSP.

-Just FYI.

Also another lifesaver is the .vmx file, created if possible at a crash ( just rename it to .vmf ). I haven't used them much since I redid my RAM but before that, they saved my ass many a time.
