When I try to play one of my maps in Counter-Strike my computer restarts for no apparent reason. I've played lots of other maps and it doesn't restart in them. The map itself isn't corrupt as far as I know, and I don't have any errors (It's just some walls a door and a player start :S)

Perhaps it tries to access some sound or wad that doesn't exist or is corrupted? I cn't think of anything else.

Post up the .MAP so we can take a look see (you'll get ?ber-slaps if there are obvious compile errors though)

This sounds like the classic case of needing a new fan for your processor, or perhaps a new power supply. I've had it has happend to me before a couple times.

Yeah, my fan only works on certain maps too. Sounds like a classic case of computer discrimination.

(sounds like a classic sarcastic batard too)

I don't know what to tell you. I used to get random crashes to desktop doing the most random things in maps, like shooting a glass window in dod_caen or walking in a simple water brush in a simple box map that I made. It sorta just went away after a while though...

 That computer has been condemned to a dusty corner of my room. The first and only time I ever attempt to make my own computer from off-the-shelf parts.

My computer has 8 fans in the case.

It has a big big fan on the processor

Here's something interesting - As I was doing a Windows XP disk check, it found that the .rmf of the map was "colinked" and it fixed it. I'll recompile now and see if it makes a difference.

Fans require very little power, you can easily piggy-back them all from one source molex or just have them hooked into a fan controller and power them from there.

The only problem I've ever had with a computer reseting itself is everybody's favourite virus: ms_blast. Thats my only suggestion I'm afraid.

his pc is not crashing with other maps or games so its not a hardware related bug due overheating or a bad powersupply.

your pc will only restart or poweroff when it has a overheated cpu cuz there is probably dust in the fans.

and even if you have 8 fans in your computer its not good cuz the windblowing is to fast and in multiple directions and it asks somewhat of your powersupply and when you play a game your whole system asks on that moment a lot, that brings up power fluctuations.

when your pc is cold and the bios is set to fast boot after a while your system is damaged due to the difference from cold to hot everytime you boot it, that is why most people their computer acts 'strangly'

my cpu cooling is a McGyver-style cooling made from reserve parts from an old powersupply, my pc is set to slow boot and mostly the first time my screen stays blank or he douz not make it to memory check.

for that map of you... are there working lights? or indeed your system asks for a corrupted wad or something. it's possible you did not put a light in it and there is a petit hole in the map and maybe compiling is ok but your bsp is bad and while starting up your memory gets filled up to fast.

maybe i should write books or something...

I think it's going to be a graphics related problem, and an error with the card/drivers is causing Windows to reset itself- if you're using XP, this will be the same as getting a blue screen of death before.
  • Try making a new, simple map and playing it in CS- does the same thing happen?
  • If so, check that paths to any custom skies, srpites and models are all correct, and that they work in other maps (along with the textures!)
  • Otherwise, Close WC/Hammer before trying to play the game. If you are running XP, go to Control Panel ? Admin Tools ? Event Viewer ? System and check out any recent errors, as they will tell you what's causing it. And try updating your graphics drivers
Failing that, post up your compile log so we can look for something wrong, and possibly try to tell you if your map is too complex or something...

and make shure if you're /my computer/system properties/advanced/startup and recovery properties have been checked.

and use win2000 instead of winxp for serious work.
