Well, with getting married soon and having to afford a ring and all that, it was about time I got me another job... My last one was a short-lived LD stint at a studio in my hometown, but after the competent people left to work on Goblin Commander at Jaleco, I got the hell out of there... But unfortunately, there aren't any other local opportunities of that sort.
So I applied at Gamestop. And got the job. And had my first day on Sunday. And let me tell you, selling games kicks ass.
First off, I get 20% off everything in the store except for used consoles. And on top of that, corporations rule - I can get up to 30% off at Barnes and Noble thanks to them being divisions of the same company. Secondly, I can check out any console game I want to a) better my knowledge of the product I sell and b) see if it's something I want in my collection. Thirdly and finally, I get to talk to people about games and help them find what they're looking for. Let me tell you, being paid to stand around and watch people's eyes light up when you start talking games they're interested in is really something.
This may not be development, but between this and my contract job that still keeps being just over the horizon thanks to the damned NIH taking forever to get the funding to us, this should keep me happy around here for a while
Of course, ironically, I got contacted by and involved with an interview process at a major studio right after all this got in motion  Figures. But even if I get offered that spot and take it, I have until July before I could go anywhere what with the wedding plans and all. So all is well

Well, Doc, fortunately when she moves in here, we have rent covered. My parents started a small college/trust fund for me at the age of 4 which, through fantastic investing through my mother, has grown to the point where it can easily cover my college education. As long as I am in school, married or no, I am able to take the amount of dorm cost of living and put it towards my apartment, which conveniently matches rent dead-on. That leaves just the internet, phone, and electrical bills to cover which, with GameStop and my contract job alone will be no problem, not to mention once Maggie settles into a new job (she too is in a between jobs phase).
And if I were offered the position at said company from earlier, salary would be enough to afford a modest place for the both of us. So I think we're in good shape. But your words do not go unheeded - I know exactly what you mean. And I do keep on top of all that quite well.

well, andrew, the only reason i even bring it up, is, well, i followed my dreams....and in the music business, as cuthroat as it is, you have to reset your moral fibre, even if it goes completely against your grain, and compromises everything you believe to be "right" in order to get to the top of the heap....i was not willing to make such deep a sacrifice, and it cost me dearly....30 years of musical training right down the crapper....but....i have a beautiful family, they are all good kids, and ive done my job well, if i may say so.... :heee: now, when they finally are all out of the house, ill get my guitars out again, and stand by for heavy rolls...i will give new meaning to the words "ruthless musician"..... **me pictures self at age 70 in a mosh pit....w00t!

Sounds like your year is getting better and better KFS  GL with the jobs, and especially the career in design
And above all else, good luck with getting a house - god knows its bloody hard for younger people to get on the property ladder here in the UK

Congratulations on the jobs.
I don't mind talking about games with people in GameStop, but when they push me to preorder a game by listing off the game's features for ten minutes it can get annoying.
I'd probably apply there if the closest one wasn't a half hour away, it would certainly be better than fast food.

Yeah, I try to keep moving across multiple titles when I'm making recommendations and not get too bogged down into one unless the person is really interested in learning more about it. I don't want to annoy anyone, after all
