What if we did map reviews for just hldm and opdm if reviews for all types is too much? Certain members can review a map bades on certain criteria and then e-mail the review to an admin. Then it can be posted. Just a thought. I don't know any other review sites. hlatlas.com is very sluggish when it comes to reviews. And I couldn't get into globalassaul.com I don'thave a membership and registrayion isn't open. Crap.

Yeah... I'm sorry about the sluggishness of it and all, but the entire site is run by me and Nick. And all Nick does is post random pseudo-comprehensible crap on the front page, because he owns the server and whatnot. So what it boils down to is that I'm the only one who actually writes reviews for the site.

And writing reviews is actually a pretty time consuming thing, and it doesn't mesh too well with me having a life to live, and crappy schoolwork, and now doing a part time ITjob for the school library.

Just a little defense of my position. Poop.

no defense needed IMO

if you had a staff of reviewers, and were still slow on them, then yeah, but by your lonesome? no way..

it took all my paltry skills to write the few i did, and i was brain drained doing just those. i definitely learned a new respect for anyone dedicated to the job... i may still highly disagree with the opinion of many reviewers, but i will never put one down for doing them anymore, even if they are completely wrong, it took some effort just writing the thing.. and that alone deserves some respect.

I dunno, I don't find it that hard to do reviews and keep this site updated. Hell, I go back and review OLD maps lol:

Action Half-Life Map Depot

For a mapper, it really means a lot to have your map get a well-reasoned review, even if it's not all positive. I figure if someone takes the time to make a map for Action HL, I can take a few minutes to give them a review. I've gotten really positive responses from people since I became a webmaster there, since I review all new maps, seek out missing maps, and generally keep things tidy and up-to-date.

(btw if you want your map reviewed, just make an AHL version and I promise you'll get your review  )

Monqi, why don't you just have a couple people on-staff to do reviews? or let people submit reviews for the TBR maps if they want to try their hand at reviewing?

[edit] remember back when PHL had 'map of the week' and it was updated maybe every 3 or 6 months?

Ya what the hell happened to planethalflife? I used to visit that site all the time. Great review section. But I stoped going because the reviews stoped coming. Half life...dead, I pray not. But that is another topic. Jinx I don't know what action halflife is...and monqui hope I didn't offend. I read on your site that you would update the TBR section so any one can review a map, that still happening. And ever consider getting more admin or something. I would write reviews but I don't consider myself...qualified. I only have three released maps and one in the works. I was invited to pixelgames.com by GreenDragon. Hopefully their reviews section is updated frequently. A very clean site.

Oh no, man. No offence taken.

And I don't technically know what happened to PHL, but I do know that they denied my site hosting about a year and a half ago, and I'm still a bit irked at them.

And I would be more than happy to actually get more reviewers on the team, but I would want to give them the ability to add in reviews/news themselves. And in order for that to happen, I need to make the admin tools a whole helluva lot more user friendly. It's about 85% done right now.

But after that gets done, I really hope to see a bit more action in the reviews section...

As for here, we don't do them 'properly' any more, although the map comments system does allow you to write your own reviews. One day I'll let you distinguish between the two though

shoot, i am halfway afraid to put more news in my profile, cause my reviews will be moved down the list to obscurity

i hope that someday we can have a more permanent system than my news.

Does any body know how to get into Globalassault.com ?

DO they do good reviews? I cant get in...noooo...uh sorry. Well when Half-Life 2 comes I hope this site has a solid review section so the community can grow its mapping skill. Because few people comment on released maps. Usually its the same people. And the comments are not well structured in terms of a criteria based system.

GA was becoming too expensive for Musting (admin) to pay for it with
the current server. Now he is porting the site to a different server or
isp or somesuch and recoding everything and its taking a long time. For
the time being you cant get into GA, but in a little while hopefully it
will be open again.

cheers for monqui

I'd say there'll be plenty of people to review maps when Hl2 comes out. I'll definatly start if I don't have the time for mapping.
