So I accidentally hit that key that shows red bounding boxes around every brush (the "I" key, as I figured out). After panicky hitting a few keys at random, hoping for something to happen, suddenly this, 3DS Max style 3D transformation stuff appeared:

You can click any brush or model and rotate the thing on the axis closest to your viewing direction. You can even click and skew it. In the 3D window!

Now I though I know every quirk and hidden feature in Hammer by now, but then this happened.

Here I found this:

"O".....Display frames per second and yaw/pitch of camera (with mouse cursor in 3D view).
"I".....Display bounding boxes for all visible objects.
"X".....Display selection handles for object resizing/rotation.

So... remember the "X" key. Can save a second here when rotating things. You can also move objects while in 3D view, using the arrow keys, but I guess that's more common knowledge? Am I just late with the X key as well?

I use the X key all the time to show me where bounding boxes are of brushes I'm trying to line up through geometry. So If I can't see where that brush may end, I can toggle the X key and see where it ends even though it may be clipping through some geometry that would otherwise hide it.

I don't bother performing transformation commands in the 3D view because it's too inaccurate/sensitive for my tastes. Also, from time to time, I use the 3D grid ("P") to see where my brushes might line up on the grid.

I'd say maybe you're a bit late with the X key; but many people don't know most hotkey commands in Hammer anyway. :teach:

BTW, I'm guessing that's a map from Neotokyo you were working on eh? :naughty:

Cool, I had no idea about the x thing.

These are the shortcuts I most commonly use in Hammer:
  • Double click object in 3D view to bring up properties.
  • Hold shift and drag object to duplicate.
  • Hold alt and move/rotate object to ingonre grid (by default my rotations are increments of 15 - set in the 2d view options).
  • Hold space bar and drag to move 2D View.
  • Scroll wheel to zoom in/out.
  • Z to toggle moving in 3D view.
  • Ctrl + X for clipping tool.
  • Ctrl + S to save.
  • Ctrl + Z to undo. ;(

(I think arron you mean shift-x, ctrl x is cut.

I use these in a regular basis. If you can master these tools, you will become a master at mapping.

Shift + B Block tool
Shift + X Clipping tool
Shift + V Vert Tool
Shift + S Select tool
Shift + W Toggle ignore groups
Shift + A Texture application tool
Ctrl + E Center the current selection in all windows
Shift + E Entity tool (I have it defaulted to prop_static)
Shift +
Z No clip mode in 3d Window

Hmm, yea, seems like the "X" key is the last one I hadn't found before. :hee:

Hammer is so generous when it comes to just clicking buttons instead of hotkeys. Radiant or the RED Editor hardly use the mouse at all, except for selecting and moving, maybe.

There are a couple of commands I have a hard time using since windows switches between German and English keyboard mapping, which causes certain hotkeys to be at odd places or not usable at all.
