Doomsday

While some say it can’t happen because the bulk of the methane is frozen into crystalline form, others point out that the underground methane sea is gradually melting from the nearby surging oil that’s estimated to be as hot as 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most experts in the know, however, agree that if the world-changing event does occur it will happen suddenly and within the next 6 months.

So, if events go against Mankind and the bubble bursts in the coming months, Gregory Ryskin may become one of the most famous people in the world. Of course, he won't have long to enjoy his new found fame because very shortly after the methane eruption civilization will collapse.

Perhaps if humanity is very, very lucky, some may find a way to avoid the mass extinction that follows and carry on the human race.
Helium leaking into atmosphere, explosions occur, poisonous gasses spread, tsunamis occur, shit happens.

Media stunt or facts? discuss.

We've got people in outer space. :p They can carry on.

It is a cause for concern though. All civilization disappearing.. not too good. If in fact there is any truth to this.

And to think, all of this may have been triggered by a single person (CEO of BP). Wow he might have a bit of trouble getting to sleep.

Think about it, if this is true, humanity will perish because of the earth slipping a giant fart.

Heh, that's a very light hearted view on it, and quite true I have to point out.
Wow, having read this article, I am starting to see what is happening, and that this may be much more serious than I thought at first.

But look on the bright side. We won't live to see this happen, because CERN will end the World before this happens :p.

Pretty much nothing in that article made any sense. The references don't actually support the article's very tenuous point either. Oh and did you know that helium.com isn't an actual scientific site and the writers get paid by the pageview?

I'm pretty skeptical about this. I've read other seemingly convincing articles like this claiming the end of the world and I guess you kind of build up a tolerance to them after a while.

TBH we have a higher chance of nuclear war happening and wiping our civilization off the planet.
But look on the bright side. We won't live to see this happen, because CERN will end the World before this happens
That too...

/side note

In watchmen if you look at there the blood landed on the Comedian's smiley face button its at 5 min to 12, 12 being the clock ticking down to nuclear war.

How does this relate? The article is implying that we're 5 min to 12.

Maybe it's just me but didn't the whole "end of the world by nuclear war" fad die out years ago? I dunno... :uncertain:

However, according to an expert interviewed by Yahoo! News....
I stopped reading after that...

I'm not really the doomsday type of guy either and I think this stuff is hogwash, but yahoo news isn't very reputable either...

On another note:

Notice how yahoo says "Yahoo! News" Notice the "!" in regular English grammar a "!" denotes a separation of sentences unless it's in """. Not really pertains to the topic, but I thought I'd point it out and spark a debate about English grammar. Anyone wanna prove me wrong? I'm looking at you Yak. Maybe make fun of my horrible grammar.

Well in the next paragraph they identify the expert as Gregory Stone the director of the Louisiana State University Coastal Studies Institute.

Guess I better call up the BBC, NYT, and NPR to get their take on this outstanding issue.

'Yahoo!' is the official company name I'd assume.

Not the expert. I'm questioning the yahoo news reporter, which could be anyone. Like joe shmo who writes/submits these reports online.
