Hey guys, It dawned on me the other day a good idea to inspire conversations....

About:
We could interview various amateur/professional level designers a series of perspective questions (how do you start a map, etc...) on their process of level design. And what would be really interesting would be to see how each one of you answers differently. I was thinking of keeping it as text-based interviews.

We will compile all this info and release an article per each interview showcasing the responses.

Criteria:
  • You must have been mapping, level designing, or critiquing/reviewing others maps for at least two years consecutively (within the past 10 years please)
  • You should have at least two and up to four images to show your works. Or links to those critiques/reviews or a portfolio page. That's it!
Amateurs and professionals alike are welcome. You do not need to be a member of The SnarkPit to participate, and nor do you have to sign up. I will be sending invitations along to other Half-Life and general mapping/level design community sites.

If you'd like your interview to be posted prior to January 5, please submit it before January 1st, that will give me enough time to post it. Other than that, I'll accept any other interview submittals throughout the next 3-4 months, and will work to get them posted as I get them...

Please see below the questions to find out how to submit your responses!

The Questions:
A list of required questions. If you wish to participate, please answer all of these 4 questions at the minimum, and then proceed to answer some of the others listed below these four.
  • Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved with level design?
  • How long have you been mapping or doing level design work and/or critiquing others' maps?
  • What games and game types do you map for?
  • If level design is currently a hobby for you, What do you plan to do, or continue doing with your experience and skills in the near future (in the next 5 years?)
Here are the rest of the questions. You will be able to submit answers to 10 of them ONLY (any 10). -Choose wisely! ;)
  • Where do you look for inspiration or whom do you look to for ideas and in what medium (books, movies, portfolios, etc.)?
  • What is your current level design method work flow? How do you start a level and then bring it to completion (maybe a list)?
  • What is the most important step or aspect in designing a level for you?
  • Are there any special techniques you use in designing your levels?
  • What percentage ratio of work would you say you do outside the level design program of choice versus within it to complete your map?(60/40, 20/80, 32/68, etc...)
  • What do you do to get your name out there for others to play your maps?
  • What three pieces of advice would you have for an aspiring level designer?
  • Are there any special programs you use when designing and building a level?
  • What other hobbies or careers do you work/study in and do you think they compliment your level design knowledge and or skills?
  • What should a beginning level designer focus on the most in attempting to develop their skills?
  • What's the most valuable lesson you've learned about level design?
  • How important is optimization to you in designing a level, and how much of your time would you say you commit to it out of the entire level design process?
  • What are some of your "level design philosophies?"
  • Is there a particular level or custom map from any game that stands out as an excellent example of craftsmanship? Why?
  • What other skills do you think are imperative for a modern level designer?
  • What kind of system do you run? (computer specifications).
  • Where are you from and where do you currently work?

  • your real name and/or your common screen name.
  • preferred contact method to be publicly posted along with your interview (not required).
  • Two to four images of your works with subtitles in the e-mail; please no larger than 1000x1000 pixels, and/or two to four links to your critiques/reviews.
  • A listing of a few projects or critiques/reviews (2-6) you will be talking about that could possibly be found on the internet somewhere. (Just the names and/or titles).
  • If you are already or plan to be a SnarkPit member (it's free and we're self supported; no spam or ads), please include your SnarkPit screen name. It will be linked with the article to your profile page.
  • If you currently work for an actual games studio, please list.
Also of note, I am willing to conduct audio interviews as well. I will use Skype, (maybe Ventrillo), but I definitely recommend Skype. I still require you to fill out the written interview because that will get posted any way, but the addition of an audio interview will be also quite beneficial and listed first in the article. If you are willing, we can find a time. Please simply make a note of it in your response e-mail and I will get back to you about a good time for the both of us to conduct it. :hee:

If you could find some humble authors I think it could be a good read. If all you can find is mappers whom think their shit don't stink then....

I've had to deal with Godhood complex's far to long to read about it.

To bad the really good mappers are elsewhere, but I think if you interviewed some new guys whom haven't gotten their hat re-sized, that would be best of all.

There are very few mappers who think their maps could be improved upon after the two year mark.

Find some humble guys and you'll do great.

Questions to consider:
Well the first and last question should be obvious being "What got you into it and What will you do from here"

All you need do is decide what and how many to put between the first and last.

[*]What was the hardest thing you had to learn about level editing?
[*]Do you have anyone in particular you looked up to or a mentor?
[*]What is your favorite map, be it yours or anothers and why?
[*]What would you recommend to a person just starting?
[*]What do you feel would be the most valuable lesson to pass on?
[*]If you had it to do all over again what would you change?

Now of course there is a plethora of ways to phrase any questions but these are a few of what I'd like people to be asked/answer.

Alrighty, sorry I've been away for a bit... School and traveling home for the holidays tends to eat up more time that I think sometimes...

Regardless, I've been giving this some more thought, and figured I could post some of the possible questions, say about 20 or 30 of them. I could then ask those interested to pick 5-10 questions (if we have a lot of interviews, that will be an awful lot to read per interview). In addition to those 5-10 questions will be some of the mandatory questions (such as: How long have you been mapping?, What got you started into level design? How did you come across the Pit? :naughty: ...and so on).

I will update this post or reply with a new one a set of questions I'll write tomorrow morning, and between now and Wednesday, if you've guys got any good ones you want to see people answer, go ahead and post em up. Eventually maybe by Thursday I can e-mail those who offered to participate and make it official that way. Also, I'll be looking to maybe get some interviews with others around the community if they're interested, and get them all posted it up here on the Pit as an Article by New Years Eve. So until then I'm gonna get some rest. :zzz:

Here are some questions you could ask:

• Would you like to start a career for level design?
• What company would you prefer to be employed in/ why?
• What tools do you use?
• How long have you been mapping/level designing
• Do you do anything other than level design / what?
• How long have you been gaming?
• What is your favorite game?
• What are your computers specs?

Yeah the last 3 aren't really necessary but hey, they could be fillers if you needed them.

I think (this is only my unofficial opinion) that everyone reading this thread who has connections/memberships at other level editing websites should promote this idea/thread by posting comments there leading back here.

This idea is good enough to warrant assistance in not only its craftsmanship but Snarkpit is worth it in and of itself.

Get out there and broadcast guys. Word of mouth is still our most valued idea here.

Snarkpits past reputations is good enough to draw participation. All we need is to get the word out there.

Your questions are good ones Riven. I think though that you should make it allowable for members to interpret the questions in their own way being as text is a poor medium to convey ideas. You can always edit the interviews you receive if someone goes off a bit left field. I mean for instance if someone is asked how they got into mapping and all they can say is how great they are at it. Or worse how a certain mappers isn't as good..

Anywhos, that prolly didn't make sense but is is a great example of how text fails to convey.

Well, needless to say, but after posting around the net, we already got in our first interview, and it is very well done. By Mr. Thiago Klafke (Minotaur0). Who also happens to be an old user here as well.

I may have found him on Mapcore.net, but he has fond memories with SnarkPit, after all, we helped him get started! He shares some wisdom about level design and the industry at large.

I would just like to say, there are currently 4 interviews now posted if you didn't notice on the front page yet.

They are: I've been getting new interviews in every day since I first posted this around the net so I'm considering this a big success! Currently I have four more interviews lined up waiting to be formatted with many more promised or at least showing interest. I'll keep them a secret so that they can be a surprise! :naughty:

Also of note... If you tried to look for the interviews in the actual database (in the articles section of our site), you may noticed they're not listed. Reason being, we've got a major bug ATM that's preventing that list from showing new articles listed under an "all games" category listing. They actually are listed, but you must visit the last page to see them. And don't bother filtering for them, they won't show up under the right filter set.

However, if you visit my profile page and select the articles section, you will see them listed there with their appropriate categories in the info bar (minus the "all games" part). I'm going to try and keep them on the front page for as long as I can without it getting too long, but in the mean time, we'll just have to wait on Larchy to respond in order to get that little bug fixed! :lookup:

2 things,
1st, the membership date of the interview member is 1969. I laughed my ass off seeing that. :rofl: Please make sure that when Larchy fixes things that he leaves that part. Its forking funny as hell.

2nd, the actual article won't show up in the article section until its been commented upon. I wonder why that is? Also, I waited to see if someone else would stand up and make the first comment this time... I got tired of waiting as I wanted to say my own bit.

So would I qualify as a amateur? I have only been seriously mapping for about two years but I haven't actually released much. Also, when submitting a interview, is there some sort of form to "fill in the blanks" or do people have to label each answer to a question by hand? (copy pasting results in strange bullet-point configurations)

Amateur = Doing something you don't get paid for or haven't been formally trained on. So, unless your full time job is a level designer ... yeah, you're considered amateur. However, the word has nothing to do with actual knowledge level. It's usually misused to mean inexperienced, but that's actually wrong.

Riven posted the questionnaire Condus. You fill in the appropriate number of questions and send it to him via email... Along with a few screens of your craftsmanship.

IMO, you're amature until you get paid, as Adam stated but your a pro if you can make a map without a leak. ;)

It's funny, I normally pride myself in my extensive vocabulary but it seems "amateur" was in the wrong place in my mental dictionary (I mean, I even had to Google it to get the correct spelling). Thanks for clearing both my questions up guys.
