So I have recently grown addicted to CS:S and have decided to try my hand at mapping for it, the only problem is that I need a few models from other CS:S maps to use in my map. This sounds like an easy fix except that either the SDK's model viewer is idiotic or I am. By this I mean that I can't seem to get it to browse to the proper folder to get at the other models. I tried the drop-down box and selected cstrike from the "mod filter" categories, but it didn't change my selection of models.

So the question is: Do I need to extract the models from the .gcf for CS:S to have access to these models or is there something I am missing concerning the model previewer?

All of the default content resides in the gcf files and you do not need to extract them to use them. Custom content is usually embedded inside the custom map's bsp file or inside the steamapps/username/counter-strike source folder.

But I would encourage people to make their own custom content because as a modern day level designer if you don't have at least basic texturing and modeling skills you're behind the 8 ball.

In hammer, place a model prop on your floor, and then select it and properties, there is a select model area, browse the models select one before clicking ok make sure the prop type is set to the models prop type, static/physic/dynamic. and there ya go.

I know how to do this, I just can't get the VHE's model pre-viewer to browse to the CS:S models.
