What are some good online document hosting services?

I've got too many random papers all over the place - at home, at university, in piles on my desk, in file cabinets, in boxes, etc. It's a huge nuisance because I move a lot and when I do I've gotta take these boxes of papers with me. Also, finding an old document when I need it is an epic challenge to say the least. However a lot of them are important so I can't just throw them out.

My plan is to scan them all, upload them to some online cloud hosting site, and then throw out/shred the physical papers. I was wondering if any of y'all had done something like this or had any advice. Google docs is the obvious choice, but only because I don't know of any others (thus this question). Free is better, but I'm actually willing to pay a little bit if it's worth it.

Pluses (things that would be nice):
+ tags and easy searchability.
+ company/website is not likely to go out of business or lose my files.
+ good/fast user interface to upload/tag tons of files without wasting a lot of time clicking around menus for each file.
+ encryption/privacy/security. The documents would include things like my tax records, medical records, etc, so I don't want some random hacker (or the government) going through it.
+ enough space for many thousands of images.
+ browser based (so i can use it on any computer without installing software).
+ integration with stuff like a personal wiki/calendar/etc (less important).

Anyways any thoughts fellow snarkpitters?

Nick, I dunno if web hosting is what you're after or not, since I am kinda unclear about your long term goal. I don't have paper to back up but I have terabytes of hard drive space with gobs of stuff.

However there was a thread at Mapcore dealing with reliable hosting.. A couple seem real inexpensive to me.

You download a program and it "syncs" your files to your online storage. You can get 2GB free, then if you refer a bunch of friends they'll give you a max of 8Gb. There are yearly options. Drop box is by far the most popular cloud storage, so it won't be going down anytime soon.

It has a minimal interface, no ads. The web interface allows you to select multiple files to upload at once, although theres probably a cap on it. If you download the program it provides you with a virtual folder that you can drop your files in, then the drop box program will upload all files on there to "sync" it with the online folder.

I don't know the exact encryption, but your files won't be able to be accessed by anyone but you or anyone with your account information. You may also set certain files to be public if you wan't to share files with someone.

I don't know about a wiki, but it does have an events area. You CAN set up your own website with the pubic options.

Its free for 2GB so it can't hurt to try the interface out.

Thanks for the advice all. I've thought about it and I'm going to give google docs a try, though if it starts giving me problem I might switch and try one of the other ones mentioned herein.
