New Portal 2 map this week

Some of you may have noticed my new map for the first Portal game I posted a few weeks ago. I finally got back into mapping again, but since it took me a while to get back into the "feeling" again, I figured I had to make another map, which I put all of my effort in, and I would like to get your opinion on it

Since, very fortunately, Portal 2 was having a 66% discount last weekend, I bought it and made my map for that game, but with the ol' Hammer Editor of course! Not the new Portal 2 editor

It's basically already finished but I'm still waiting with releasing it for a few more days since it still has some minor bugs and some other stuff I want to alter a bit.

The Story (It's not much but I wanted to have at least something)

GLaDOS has altered the stasis beds within the relaxation vaults, and now GLaDOS has control over the test subject's dreams. Of course, GLaDOS wants to make even more tests, and she has now forced the test subjects to test 24/7.

The map features:

• 5 test chambers with original puzzles
• Custom GLaDOS lines by me (Heh, just wait and you'll see )
• A few Easter Eggs

And more, but I won't spoil everything. I hope I can get some people to play it (that was actually the purpose of this topic) and get some criticism.

I am actually extremely excited for this, keep us updated with progress and when your releasing it!

I have an exam tomorrow so I probably won't have so much time, but what is left to do is not that much. It's certainly finished this week though. Probably thursday, but I can't say for sure!

Thanks, next monday the exams will continue again, so I have 4 days off in the meantime to both study and work on the map (don't worry, I'll schedule both well )

I was having a dilemma with the last test chamber, since it was difficult on a frustrating way, but now it's challenging on a fun way (I hope).

It's not finished yet, but I'm making progress.

The map is called Dreamortal, do you guys think I should stick with the name?

Could play on the wording like Mortal Dream or Immortal Dream I kinda like Dreamitall.

All my maps had unique names. Took me nearly as long sometimes to name them as build them. BUT all the names fit near perfect.

Haha, yeah naming a map can be as hard as making it sometimes, however this just came to mind and I kinda liked it.

I could also just go for Mortal Dream, though it reminds me of Mortal Kombat

The reason I went for "mortal" is because GLaDOS isn't exactly familiar with testing in dreams, and it may not end so well if the test subject dies within a dream.

It also fits after the word "dream" and mortal rhymes with portal as well. Though I just made that up right now.

Well use Mortal Portal then. Everyone will think its a kickass map.

I'll just go for Mortal Dream

I think I'm just gonna leave things as they are now. The custom sounds have a bit low volume, but when I make them louder within audacity it seems to break the sound effects in-game (Painful loud static noise as a result).

I think the program exports them with different properties, ones which the source engine can't handle. So I'm just gonna try and see if I can fix that lastly. (< is that a word?)

Edit: Ok, I fixed the issue. The file had to be an 8 bit wav file, instead of 16 bit.

When I made the screenshots however, my pc just really couldn't handle the highest settings, so the map should look better on other pc's.

Is there anyone who could make some screenshots of the map for me (It doesn't have haste) who has a better pc than mine? I believe the shader detail was set to low or medium when I made the pictures, so that's a big downgrade from Very high or just high.

I don't have the greatest pc ever either, 9800gt but its not a huge difficulty to maybe play through it everything on highest settings (I generally play on medium). Would be glad to help... now where do I post the screens? :P

It's ok if you just play the map first etc so that you don't have worries in the meantime But it's a big difference with my gfx card since mine is a 7600GT.
I hope I optimized the map enough so that it won't lag on your pc with the highest settings. Anyway, thanks a lot for the offer though!

What you could do for example is make the screenshots on the same spots as I made them (though some require noclip, so if you're going for that attempt you can better do it after you've completed the map, to avoid spoilers :p) For most screenshots I increased my fov to about 110 - 120 using cl_fov and I removed the portalgun and the crosshair using "r_drawviewmodel 0" and "crosshair 0"

But it's ok if you just make some gameplay screenshots as well, on various areas. I didn't make a screenshot of every part of the map on purpose because I still wanted some chambers to be kept as a secret

Sorry I haven't gotten around to doing this yet, I too have exams coming up, we call the the "Junior Certificate" in Ireland and its based on the stuff we've done in the last 3 years, so its pretty big. Sorry I haven't had a look yet, and haven't done the screen shots yet but hopefully soon, when I'm ahead of my timetable, I'll do it

And don't worry about the screenshots, they aren't that important, at least I do have some.
