Soundcard woes

I've just bought a second hand IBM Thinkpad 600E. I've installed Slackware Linux 9.1 on it, and it's running very well. Except the souncard doesn't work.
According to AlsaOpenSrcOrg and the ALSA project website, the sound card included in the 600E's is a Cirrus Logic CS4232. However, according to lspci, it's being detected as a CS4610/11.
I've installed Linux 2.6.3, and included the ALSA drivers for all of the Cirrus Logic soundcards, but when I modprobe the drivers I get this:

FATAL: Error inserting snd_cs4232: No such device.

So, I try to insert the CS46** drivers.

1. modprobe snd-cs46xx

WARNING: Error inserting gameport: Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg).

I run lsmod to find out if it was inserted properly or not, and I notice that it is.

Okay, so the module's there. I test it with alsamixer:

1. alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

I look in /dev/sound - nothing's there at all! What's going on here? How can I fix it?

Dude, I have a ThinkPad 600 and my sound doesn't work either, I honestly have no idea how to get it working.
(Not that I really use sound on my laptop.)

The ThinkPad sound stuff has always been a little buggy and tempermental. However, if something isn't working properly in Linux I can usually use Yast2 to check it out, but that's only available in SuSE. Hmm ... I suppose check out IBM's site for some driver updates for Linux, because there's a few.
IBM Diagnostics That link is to online diagnostics that you can run from the site if I'm not mistaken, so if there's something actually wrong with the audio it'll tell you. You can have a look around for some Linux Audio drivers too.

Lately mines being a bitch. It keeps giving the 192 error, which means something is wrong with the board. Also my battery died and it costs $209 for a new one . . . I'd rather put that towards a new laptop lol.

......I just noticed the fine print on the site which said the tests are meant for Windows ran notebooks.......oops

A BIOS Update Will probably help with some added ultilities.
If you want to see if the audio is actually alright turn the laptop off hold F1 and turn it on, keep holding F1 until it beeps and the 'bios' will come up, you can test your hardware, I suggest testing the audio hardware.

Thanks for the link to the bios update; I'm running it now. I've found a bunch of resources which tell me that sound is supposed to work just dandy with TP600's. Well, I'm muddling through it.

Hm. I wonder how the hell I can get this BIOS bootable floppy in with no floppy drive :razz:

Hey ,I have one BIG problem. I have a CreAtive SoundBlaster Live! 5.1. It's supposed to be a god card, but I can't use the microphone with it. the only way the microphone works is with Creative's own software. Now, I want t use the voice-comm programs

um, you need general drivers then, I think. Try looking around creative's site for some nice shinny new ones.

Heh, that's exactly right. I'm using the OSS drivers right now, but hopefully with some hacking I can get the ALSA drivers working. But hey, it's working now.

ha ha, I never thought of that. Mine seems to work in an Window environment, but not Linux is why. . .well . . . at least you have new drivers too lol.
