I saw something in the startup stuff for HL or AHL that suggested this was possible a while back, but noone knew wtf I was talking about

now wait a sec.... this means you could add detail textures to older maps without actually changing anything in the .bsp, right? hmmm, a couple of my maps might be getting updates

[edit] hell yes, got it to work- though it still gives an error and says it isn't working lol. now we just need some good detail textures, and some practice figuring out what looks good.

me, me!

works fine in AHL:

you can really see quite a difference between the wall texture, which has a detail texture, and the trim on the right that doesn't. Will take some tweaking to get it to look right, though.

gives Gwil a cookie

It only works with Steam HL, and you have to have a fairly recent video card to display them that supports 3-4 layers of multi-texturing or something (Sadly, my GF4 MX is part of the group that can't). Only mod I've seen to use them to good effect is Hostile Intent though - most people seem to think adding a bit of noise and blurring it is a great detail texture (which it isn't! )

Good luck to anyone who wants to work on those detail textures though. I can't even see them, and I've seen a lot of bad applications of detail textures.

yeah, CJ, I'm having trouble getting anything that actually looks much better than without detail textures.

taking some tinkering, but I'm getting some stuff that looks better. note how the floor texture on the left has a detail texture applied, whereas its sister textures on the right do not.

the scale of the detail texture makes a bit difference, they look a lot better when they have the look of a fine, tiny detail imo. that usually means having the scale at 10+ (the scale being the number of times the detail is repeated per instance of the normal texture). I think I used the 'sandstone' filter in the 'texturizer' in photoshop on a plain grain 128x128 texture to create that detail texture. anyone know a place I could get more good texture filters for photoshop, those seem like a good way to do it.

I even had a little fun with detail textures:

uh, I think that one looks at least okay cassius.

that hostile intent stuff is just amazing, though. time to download that 'map upgrade' pack and see what their textures are like and how they are scaled.

the hostile intent detail textures look sort of like modified versions of the original textures (made b&w, contrast changed some) and set to match their scale. going to tinker with this on Temple and see if I can approximate what they did.
