Dunno how many people will see this buried in on the 7th page, but I gotta say the "New Map" feature on the front page of Snarkpit it such a great idea, but so flawed in implementation. The primary problem is thus: people add maps to their profile once they have taken to working on the map. At this point, the map is far from complete, although it is usually more than just an hour or two of fiddling. Basically, none of the newly added maps are worthwhile to view at their current state. I may see something I think looks good, but typically I refrain from commenting until there is a finished, or nearly finished, product available.

Suggestion: Maps added to a profile are not listed on the front page. Rather, there is a checkbox on the map page when you update it that designates "updated release" which a mapper will check when they have a full dl available. For a map that goes through multiple versions, they can recheck the box every time a substantial version goes online. While this may still be a tad confusing in the hands of an overzealous mapper, I still think a substantial improvement to the newly added map system will result, especially for mappers who use it only in conjunction with major release.

i bet he is copy/pasting this suggestion as we speak :heee:

To sum it up Orph, my suggestion was just a way to make the New Maps column show New Maps instead of New Projects.

Why can we actually only choose between UPLOAD or SITE URLS, and not just do both? Do both would mean you could direct to a total of 8 images! A whomping 8 images indeed......

No serious, why can't we? Is there a reason to this madness?!

You should only need three screens to sell your map. If you want people to look at screens to give tips and advice post a thread in the forums with as many screens as you like.

Question, Lep if we update our maps, to fix the broken links snarkpit is plagued with, will it remove the screenshots?

i mean, i can prolly reload the maps to snarkpit, but i don't have the screens anymore..

i guess, i could save them in advance by copy/paste.. but i am curious

1) it could/would be nice to see the history of each persons personal news.

2) it could/would be nice to see all the polls at a glance, the search option doesn't bring them up

You can view people's news history, if they've made more than 5 posts in the past there should be a link underneath it saying 'show all news' or something.

Maybe have a Who rated who thing. Like when you click your rating, it will show you who rated you 1's, who rated you 2's, 3's etc.

that would discourage rating, in favor of retaliatory responses

i do feel though, that anyone who cant be rated, should not be allowed to rate others... its only fair.

same holds true for maps, and such, if you have no maps, you should not be able to rate them.. this is after all an editing website, not a players website, no one here should have to hear any opinions except from peer's

Actually Orph, there's tons of people who create maps who would actually like to hear the player's response. Not all maps are supposed to be Eye-candy, some are actually supposed to be playable.

Ok, so what do I do if someone lets themselves be rated so they can rate other people, then changes back to being un-rateable? I don't see the problem, or the difference with having a hidden rating.

actually bruce

LOL, no one would debate that silly, the issue though, comes in when the mapper thinks they know enuff already... if the map is unplayable, its unplayable, the amount of detail is not ever IMO the reason for this, but instead its the authors inability to incorporate good ideas.

i would better listen to a mappers advice, simply because a mapper can play, but a player cannot map. a good player knows what they want, but not the foggiest idea how to achieve it, or even if its possible, a good mapper can envision a great map, and if he is lucky produce it, and in some cases acknowledge why it failed. for this reason alone, you should never consult strictly players, the map will fail every time.. the next question though would be, if you relied strictly on mappers for advice, would this guarantee a successful map?? not really, but the odds are considerably higher, the only weak link would be the mappers ability.

maps that are built to suit players usually never fall into the good, or great categorie... they usually are just crap, period. if a map is liked by players, it was prolly not because of them.

anywho's, in the end, if its successful, who cares how it got that way

i hate to admit a short coming, but this one seems to be mine, cause it never occurs to me how people can screw the system like this..

you make a good point, i dunno if its because you know how to screw stuff up, or are just that smart.. but anywho's.. you are most definitely right... sorry, i didn't see it before i posted the silly request

if a mapper consults players and produces a quality map, it was the skill of the mapper that pulled it off. if the map fails, it was because the mapper was stupid enuff to ask players.

players are a necessary by product of the first person shooters, a necessary evil that mappers must contend with. no matter what the map looks like, some will think it great, some not.. very damned few mappers make all perfect creations.

if you learn to play a piano, and do it well enuff to pick up some sheet music of bach, and play it flawlessly, it still doesn't make you bach, or his equal.. and i might add it would be very arrogant to think otherwise.. you are not, nor will you ever be, bach.

anyways, even if you disagree with any or all of this viewpoint, it doesn't make it incorrect, you just happen to disagree with it.. you are not bach remember.. so don't even entertain the idea that you know better.

bottomline, if a map is played, it is played.. it has been proven many times that quality and played seldome coincide..

/ 2 cents

You are wrong Orpheus and I know better, and if you don't agree with this viewpoint that doesn't necessarily make it incorrect, you just happen to disagree with it.

On to more important business, Leperous, it would be wise IMHO to make the map delete function (profile editing) more prominent. I keep overlooking it, because it's a form button way in the editing thingy.

/me notices empty profile, empty opinions as well, at least.. till proven otherwise..

you have an opinion, its no better or worse than mine is, but mine has experience behind it.. yours might too.. just not around here, at least not yet.

if i were to write music, i would seek out as many Bach's as i could to get opinions about it.. i would never seek out the peons who moved my piano for me.

if it makes you feel better, i have had people i respect tell me i am mistaken about this viewpoint.. it didn't change my mind an ounce, but they had the decency to have experience to back up their words.. i think i will wait till you have something to show me before i take your word about being wrong.

Sheeeeez, and I thought you were the one who told other people that they had no sense for humor. You've been here longer, yeh you're right I should start blowing some smoke up your ass for that fact.

All I said was that some people actually do value the comments of players, and since you were advising leperous to make these players unable to rate a map I considered it unwise and made a comment.

"no one here should have to hear any opinions except from peer's"

In the future, I'll shut the f**k up and keep all to myself because it seems this forum isn't made for the non-established to share their opinion.

let me clarify something, before you begin something you cannot win.

no mapper ignores advice, ever.. or at least no respected mapper should. if a nobody, say BRUCE told me my map needed something to be perfect, i would take his idea to people i trusted and ask them about it. if the idea had merit, BRUCE would get full credit for it.

but i must stress, i realize i do not know the mind of every damned mapper out there, but of those i do know, they do NOT actively seek out players and ask them anything... i am sure we have some here who might, but it has never really been important enuff to debate, cause i don't write their text files for them, i don't know whom they thank or not. so who really gives a rats ass? i am telling you i don't, and won't ask players opinions.. they have none of value worth seeking out. but like i said, if they were to bring one to me, i damned sure would take it seriously, IF ITS BROUGHT TO ME IN THE SAME CONTEXT..

bruce, don't turn this into something its not.. i told you my opinion, you screwed up when you said i was wrong.. you would have done much better had you just informed me of your opinion as if it were something worth listening to.. wrong is not a good word to type into an opinion of value.

anyways.. i hold to my belief, but must say, i would respect no one i currently respect differently if all of a sudden they informed me that their whole success was directly due to player input.. i would still value their opinions as MAPPERS.

/nuff said.

well next time I have a question I will put it there. But seriously, if you think about it, it wasent editing related. I didnt ask "how do you make a elevator" or "how do you compile a map" or "whats a info_player_start". I asked "why the f**k is this feature in a program not working".

Anyways, I reinstalled and its still not working out... Guess I'm stuck using Ctrl+M for the rest of my days...

a great idea was forwarded to me today via Edge Damodred.

since we all eventually will be forced to go with steam, our steam names should be available in our profiles, much like our aim, icq, msn and irc accounts are now..
