This is a katana I've made using 3Ds max 6.

I haven't made the trees myself, I just generated them and the stump which the katana is stuck into is ugly as hell, I know, but it's only there to have something to stick the katana into.

The model looks nice, as does the skin, but the lighting doesn't make it look very realistic. There is no real highlight on the blade, it looks kinda flat rather than reflective metal.

I don't think I'm going to use it for anything, just made it for practice.

What's "tsuba"? Is it the thing on the handel with the japanese character on it?

The hand guard - they're usually quite decorated and fancy, as an image search will show you.

The bit at the end of the handle could do with being a little smoother.

You still need a better texture for the metal part. A knife or sword just doesn't look like that - you need either loads of tiny scratches, or extrusion lines. Could you try taking a high-res photo of a big kitchen knife, then make that a tileable proper metal texture to use?

What's a Hamon?

I guess it's quite a lot of things I need to fix to turn it from just quite good to very good

Its like a line you get along the blade, usually from where the swordsmith has used different materials in the blade which form small crystals where the sword is stronger, but also more brittle. Tends to look a bit more white and be in wavey lines, you'll need to look closely at some swords to understand, but when you've skinned it on it will be good.

Also try putting a good ol' dragon engraving on the side of the blade, they always look cool

Post the skin flats for the katana; it'll be easier to give better feedback.
