My friend, CardO, of Quake 1 mapping has released a new DMC map!  The map is designed for 1v1, I believe, and it is very nice

Pics look nice - I am a real sucker for classic Quake architecture and think it is undervalued these days.  Will have a look if/when I get a chance.

Right then.

I'm not "too good" to post my own replies but I didn't have an account until I read what people had written. I'm not confused with any textures; they're dmc textures which are made in quake fashion. Just because it's half-life doesn't mean it should use half-life textures.. if that's what u meant by that comment?

anyhow, thanks alot for the compliments everyone and I would very much appreciate critique  If u can be bothered, a mail to cardo@planetquake.com would be great. thanks alot!

to crackerjack. Yes. i've just joined the citizen-132 team to help with their mp maps. http://c132.halflife-mods.com/news.php

Oh.. and i'm messed up how orpheus?! it's uploaded to fileplanet because that's the default server that all the planet sites use.. incase u hadn't noticed :P

.. and yes i know they're turd.

  you will fit in nicely .. you have a bit to learn of our nuances, but given time.. you'll do OK

my joke, was small i admit, but it has been a topic between dietz and i over his quake buddies being stand-offish when it comes to HL..

my joke wasn't that it had to look HL, but that the DMC textures are HL in spite of their appearance.. anyways it was an insiders joke.. dietz may have gotten it

fileCRaPlanet is needlessly hard to use.. my complaint wasn't entirely directed towards you, but we often resist any temptation to use them any time.. anytime we can, we switch to a site and upload as soon as possible to a more user friendly URL..

my link originates here so everyone else won't have to endure the troubles...

my critiques usually take on the form of a forum post, so you can get the advantage of more eyes, but i can send it via PM upon request.., this will get you to return at least long enuff to read it  .. i don't send critiques via email..

lemme know how best to suit you..

and "WELCOME ABOARD"

cheers for the kind greeting orpheus  as for posting critique here, that's fine by me, I just check my e-mail more than forums really. Anyhow I hope u get a chance to mess about on the map, I have no idea what it'll play like 1v1 since I had no one in my anti-hl related irc channel to test against and wanted to get it out asap. Hopefully the item placement will be ok using my previous quake knowledge

just gimme a bell asap as I'm dying for some feedback

yeah, it is a shame to have to sneak out a map under the cover of darkness :heee:

maybe you should consider alternate friends, we at least acknowledge quake has a purpose.. most quakers i have met, look on HL as a degenerate quake clone.. sad really, cause quakers have such talent to, to bad we seldom get the chance to improve upon it..

anywho's i will look the map over soonish, i am a tad busy ATM, Kornflakes has my undivided attention at present, much to wildcards chagrin

The Obligatory warning message: This is NOT a review, it is to be considered opinion only, and as such totally dis-regarded if it is contrary to the authors intended results.. anything in this critique can be ignored with no ill will or hard feelings incurred..

also, i must point out, that in 99% of my critiques, they are given prior to release, and intended as a guide to help in its release, this map, i assume, has already been released, so.... from this point onwards, it will be more for any future releases, and lastly, this map was near perfect, so most, IF NOT ALL of my comments will seem like nit-picking.... so without further pause..,

in these above 6 shots, you will note the texture misalignment, this is a common mistake, and one that i am not sure if , restricted to HL mapping.. when someone clips a corner off a solid, then applies the texture, the ratio is almost always off , often stretch at times by 2 or 3 times.. i spent days trying to remedy this in my map N_P, and still i missed a few..

i am betting that if checked, the scale would need dropped to .70 or even .50 to get it to scale properly..

this light fixture ( and all the rest too ) seems to incorporate an added light entity, but if you look close the fixture is recessed, and IMO could have been better employed if a lightspot were used instead.. also if the textured light had been boosted in the lights.rad a bit, the entity light could possibly have been omitted all together... still a light spot would have done a much better job..

User posted image

another nit-picking point.. the pillar on the left is moss encrusted due to the moisture level (altho there is a lava source close by, so i bet steam must be the main growth factor  ) but the pillar on the right is moss free..

User posted image

seen from the other side, it becomes more apparent.. the now left pillar looks wrong, when the right one looks like wood and slimy.. while it is clean as a whistle..

User posted image

these floor slits really add another factor to game play, but this one is a bit oversized.. it felt odd hovering over a slot, that was obviously big enuff to drop thru..

User posted image

the little added ambiance items really added to the general feel and atmosphere.. this broken crete was a perfect addition.

all in all, i loved the general feel and layout of this map, the connectivity was perfect IMO, and the item placement seemed fine as well.. i personally think thin is more conducive to the strategy minded players, and this one qualifies 100%..

i was un-nerved by an aspect i never noticed before, in none of my tests, were there any footsteps evident.. the sound was missing completely, i never noticed this before and found that it retracted from the game, instead of adding to it strategically, being able to move soundlessly, was never my idea of good gaming...

anyways.. all in all this map rates up there with some of the best i have seen, and since i am more partial to smaller maps, this one managed to catch my attention and would have to say, it is a must play to anyone whom likes DMC fragging..

nice job.. i hope to see more "beta's"  from this author..

Or just click the "align to face" checkbox, rather than "align to world".

No, I'm referring to the fact that CardO didn't ask me to test his map before release... the anti-hl channel he speaks of is also the channel I frequent

Thanks alot Orpheus! very constructive critisiscm. very helpful too

The 45 degree walls were mostly taken care of by checking the 'face' box in the texture properties which unstretches most of them so i'm not sure if what's left is an optical illusion or the fact that they just don't line up brick by brick to the adjacent walls. I didn't think it particularly mattered that much tho but thanks for pointing it out.

As for the lighting. Yeah u'r right. I could have made them look nicer with texture emitting light or entity spotlights but I tend to stick in basic entities most of the time due to working with quake so much I suppose. It's just quickest for me

The other queries about the lava and molded wooden beams. I wanted lava as an almost instant kill factor and didn't wanna be wading about in slime for ages. The moldy beams I didn't wanna overuse so just used them either side of that atrium instead of for each doorway.

Finally. the hole in the Floor which looks oversized was not clipped away or tampered with in anyway. so maybe Quakeman just has big feet or something to be able to run over such gaps  it needed to be big enough to lob rockets through tho. and that gave it a very quakey feel imo.

.. and Dietz. I didn't ask you because u'r never usually there when I do ask you. I send u pm in terrafusion pretty often but u'r always out with a random girl... p1mp!

thanks again for brilliant feedback orpheus. and thanks to dietz for posting the map up here in the first place. All your comments are much appreciated!
