I decided to load up Half-Life and have a go on it for an hour after
getting home from college today. Although I was in deep thought while
playing, which is 'the game would make such a cool remake' . I mean
going through the Black Mesa with new textures and slightly changed and
more detailed architechture, and then even the choice of adding bump
mapping.

Although it might be better to wait until Half-Life 2 (Snoozing while
saying that, we've waiting well over a year) is released, and recreate
with higher limits and on a smoother engine.

Although I personally think it's a good idea which could well be done
for HL1 and maybe ported to HL2, although really depends on community
support and if anyone wanted to do it.

Although, discuss the possibilities, which are near endless considering HL2's status.

Ehm ... they already made that ... It's called Half-Life: Source, and will be released together with HL2.

Half-Life: Source is already finished. It will be released with the
Collector's Edition version of HL2, and the silver and gold packages on
Steam. Though all they've done is convert it to a new engine, they
haven't changed any of the actual media i.e. models, sounds, maps etc.
It's just to show off how easy it is to port HL1 maps to HL2.

Apparently, also, there have been a few mods teams that have contacted
Valve about re-creating HL1 to a more modern standard in graphics etc.
and Valve are quite interested in helping them do something like that
in the future.

As far as I know, HL:Source is just normal Half-Life with some new effects.

I like the idea of creating it with new media etc. which is what I was
getting at Forceflow. Read more carefully  HL Source will just suck,
all it is, is HL1 with funky physics.

Yeah, HL source looks terrible, for one reason. When they put HL ontop of the HL2 engine, they had to go through and reedit all the maps to make them compatable, this includes entites. So, now, they didn't change a single texture or model (they might have used HD pack models though), they have this kick ass water from HL2. It just looks wrong. But, back when they first said they were making HL1 source, they said anyone is free to go in and make new models/textures to spiff up HL1.

And yes, that would be cool.

Redoing all of Half-Life would take way too long. I think it's
brilliant to let the mod teams do all the work for them instead. I
might try my hand at it, as well. You could probably combine 4-5 BSP's
at a time as well; whole chapters could be 1 map!

Physically, yes. Quite the hog to compile I'd wager.

Get off of compile time taking so long. So what? It's a one time deal once you're done. As long as the final product/map is performing well who cares?

Not to mention I'd imagine that you'd build small areas and them put them together.

I think the really cool thing about it is, I don't think an enormous amount of modeling would need to be done (past the marines, weapons, and various new mesh features), because quite a few people return from HL1.
