There was an app called winbsp that would decompile HL1 maps, but I doubt there is any such utility out yet for HL2. It's a usefull tool for finding out how specific effects were done, but prone to abuse.

There is a tool called VTEX scattered somewhere across the net which
gives decompiles with an accuracy of about 98%. I suggest you google it.

work. Everytime i click it the comand prompt thing pops up, then
dissapears quickly. i think this has something to do with java. as the
FAQ said on the VMEX link. but im still confused. can someoen help.

yah i realized that like 4 seconds after my post. I already downloaded it and got GCFScape and VMEX running just dandy.

On a side note, because im bored. If anyone has a map they want the vmf
for Ill just decompile one for you, because this was acually a
long and annoying process finding out all the crap you need. Just tell
me the map and post the maps bsp, or if its a vavlve map like dust or
something just say i want dust. Ill post the vmf here for it.

Umm... amazingly long process??? Dude, what computer are you using! It
takes me 2 seconds for actual Decompilation! No maps have taken longer!

Well... from beginning to end, let us see:

Closing down steam - 5 seconds

Opening GCF - 5 seconds

going to folder - 5 seconds

extracting map - 5 seconds

closing gcf and opening steam - 20 seconds, in the meantime:

{

running vmex - 2 seconds

finding map - 10 seconds

decompiling - 3 seconds

closing vmex - 2 seconds

}

That's it with the dust map I just tried. Took the timer and popped it. Takes lesser than minute if you do it fast.

So... who said anything about "Long" process????
