When i 1st mapped i mapped for the old half life and started messing with models, monsters gunz etc
i went on to cs and made a couple of maps that my friends described how they should be!
After a while i mapped for mods that were similar to death match and well hl2 came out and by then i had the power of source in my pocket and started mapping for css and started on willitia and then i came to hl2 mapping and had a little go and thought it isnt as fun as cs:s in my opinion as it is one player and so i came to hl2dm and found that it had more options and was online at the same time
I still map for cs:s but sometimes i like to spend time making one detailed room and add on to it then compile and see errors and carry on etc
a good example is to make a room in a good shape and then use window textures and build walls around them, cut out the window picture and build wooden frames around the edges (if its wood that is) and start making more detail etc, use decals, models are the best since they have lots of detail and take less space than brush based objects!
Try this and then you will get lots of experience and the game i think you should map for first is hl2dm to be honest its a great game with many possibilities
2nd should be cs:s as all your friends can play it and see it  and it has different types of games so you have many choices to be applied to your map
enjoy

Hey man thx...i really appreciate that
but 1 thing :
"a good example is to make a room in a good shape and then use window textures and build walls around them, cut out the window picture and build wooden frames around the edges (if its wood that is) and start making more detail etc, use decals, models are the best since they have lots of detail and take less space than brush based objects!"
can u really tell me (EXPLAIN) to me more about these...cuzz these are my weak point in mapping (DETAILING)...its hard...and makes the game lag...

here's a rule of thumb for new mappers: Don't release a map until you've at least 1 year experience with mapping. it takes a while to get a feel for all the ents and all the nuances of the game before a REALLY good map can be made.

Personally, I'd do single player first -- but HL2's monster/AI setup is a lot more complex than the ones in the original HL, so don't be suprised if you have "blind" monsters!
Night Wolf probably had the best suggestion though: Make what YOU enjoy playing!
