Yeah, don't make an entire site out of flash

They're slow, usually have terrible interfaces, and require load times.

Use flash sparingly, if at all.

I hate flash sites because they take control away from the person browsing and put it into the hands of the website designer. It may look spiffy and all, but it hinders access to information and turns browsing the site into an experience more like watching TV where everything is scripted.

Want to open a link in a new tab? Whoops, can't do that. Searching the page with ctrl+f? Can't do that either. Want to resize the font to make reading the page easier? No can do. Want to view the page source? Nope, its all caught up in somewhat inpenetrable a flash file. Trying to copy text with ctrl+c? Nope. FFS, you can't even get an appropriate menu when right clicking on something.

Yea, I wanted it to make buttons and stuff, not entirely, just put it
into a HTML. Hence layers and buttons. Maybe a fading banner up the
top. I agree though, they can look tacky if over used.

Agree with mazemaster, the only time it should be allowed is for spinkee website effects (e.g. logos, interactive features)

Hmm, I do not agree. Some flash sites do look very amazing.

I try to do some flash design myself. I could have never done this by using (D)HTML, I think: http://thinkinc.4x2.net

Some fully flash websites are good, but most suck. Like the DOA-BC website, thats well made, and some of the other Xbox games websites.

It's only good for something minimal with less information, or else it just becomes bloated and restrictive.

Flash is like colored lighting, a little goes a LONG way.

Flash is great for certain things, like persistent navigational
elements, IF the use of Flash is for organizing a complex nav system
(that needs to be able to display extended info on possible destination
pages or for sorting things with drop-down or fly-out menus).

And Flash animationed cartoons are great, if the ideas and execution are great.

Flash site intros are RIGHT OUT. They were already old when Flash hit the scene.

I've always wanted to use Flash for miscellaneous tutorials, the way
http://www.howstuffworks.com/ does. Less bandwidth and more interactive
than a VTM - but of course more work to produce too.

But in general there's so much you can do with a site with coding
nowadays (I'm learning the ins and outs of CSS2 - tricky but powerful
stuff), that the "all Flash" website isn't really neccessary and might
impede the actual site viewing process, IMO.

Oh but to answer the root question - Macromedia has great tutorials http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/flash/
