Hello people.

My mate's problem: If he starts up Hammer 4 and creates a brush, the
CPU load of his computer jumps up to 100% and he can not do anything.

Any suggestions how to fix the problem?

Thanks in advance.

[EDIT]

Important to know:

[16:32] <OtZman> what CPU does he have?

[16:32] <OtZman> perhaps it's just to old to make it?

[16:32] <d1ng> P4 2.8 Ghz

[16:33] <d1ng> 1024 MB RAM

Yeah, do you have Half-Life 2 running in the background while you map?

Is it Hammer that's upping to 100%? I've noticed some programs 'interfere' with processing in this way, particularly a distributed computing program I run called Boinc which often messes with Explorer and jams it. Get him to close everything in the background (one at a time, to troubleshoot) and see if this helps. It may also be related to the 3D views- see what happens if he changes the top-left window into another 2D top-down/side view instead.

He could also try lowering the base priority of Hammer via task manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) if it's being an arse :/

this happened with me when i left the sdk menu window open after starting hammer, but there was an update that fixed the problem.

It could be that your mates not went online with steam to get the update, or there's another prog causing the same prob. Lep's suggestion looks about right.

Well he told me that he can work without lags if he has 4 2D windows.
As soon he switches one of them to 3D mode though, the monitor starts
to flicker temporarly (Like changing freqs of your monitor). Then
he has these lags again.

Since yu are helping your friend and responding for him/her its safe to assume he/she has no internet... I would find out what Video card the computer has and locate a newer driver, save that file to a disk and then install it on their computer.

Graphic probs happen for 3 reasons: Overheating, Not Updated, Program intervention (mass CPU Usage)
