There's been a new update over Steam adding a new map and more importantly for me, the following line in the announcement:
Moved default Steam port to 27009 (UDP) from 27030. Use -steamport to override this setting
Does this mean I can change the steam port by adding "-steamport 8080"
for example, and where does this parameter go? It seems to infer that
by "overriding" the setting you don't just switch back, but actually
set it yourself. It would be useful if I could put Steam through the
8080 port, as it's the only one that works here, and tunnelling doesn't
work either. This is probably a daft post, but is what I want to do now
possible?

I would imagine it would work as long as the port is free. Try putting -steamport 8080 into the console.

after the new update i cant connect to any server, it just says,
"couldnt connect to master game server to recieve server list" or
something like that, is it because of the port changeing thing?

Yep, slight problem there. I can't actually get the update that does
this until a week on Saturday, so I can't test it myself. Is -steamport
a console command then? Judging by the hyphen before it, I'd have
thought it was a parameter. The question is: to what? The games, or the
Steam client?

Are you behind a router? If you are you might need to change the ports
which you have forwarded to your machine to the new steam ports.

Speaking of the steam update: Has anyone looked at the new map
dm_runoff. After playing it I must say that it not only does it look
like S***, its got a lot of bugs galore! (BTW this is my opinion, don't
get mad at me if you dont like it!)

Bugs list:

1) I read on the steam forums that you can jump onto a railing and get
out of the level. After testing it out it is easy to get out of the
level.

2) When you push the "air strike" button, you can ride the platform up, and call in more air strikes!

3) When the two blast doors come down (after you push the air strike
button) you can place barrels and non-destroyable physics props to stop
them from closing, eliminating the whole point of the air strike
entirely. There is a little option in func_door that says to push out
physics props at all costs when closing, they could have checked that!

The way it looks:

1) Poor texture choice, everything is in concrete and it makes it look dull.... where is it taking place? A dryed up canal????

2) There isnt anything interesting about the brush work of the level
either. Its al boxy. The placement of eveything seems random, I ask my
self why is there a train station lugage carryer in a canal?

I cant say much for gameplay as ive only looked at it, but from what Ive seen there would be nothing special about it.

All in all I have to say that you should at all costs stay away from
this map, and seek help if you think it looks good. I also heard that
it causes crashes on alot of servers, so lets not put it up on the
snarkpit server.

/rants

dm_runuff is a f**king piece of s**t. Just like Steamlab. Boooooorrrrrring.

edit:

There is even a big, pointless dead end with nothing but a shotgun + shotgun ammo (which you might use ONCE if you are lucky since this isn't a close-range map) in it. the one redeeming factor to this map that makes it slightly different is that when the missle comes to kill everyone....there is an actual warhead (head-crab carrier) that comes down. Other than that? s**t.

Hey I actually liked steam lab. Valve even went so far as to add the hidden room in runoff as dario did in crossfire.

hidden?! where?

I like run off, team play is great on that map... trying to hold the
main room. But other then the air strike it dosn't feel ANYTHING
like crossfire.

You have to no clip down into the center (underneth the "base"), its a
square room with two "sewer" pipes leading to dead ends. But I really
dislike it, its very unprfessional looking (just look at the railings
and you'll see what I mean) Clipping is a nightmare, and there is still
the problem with the doors not shutting due to a prop obstruction.

edit: the hidden room in crossfire is know as the blue room (HL1 vets
know what im talking about) just noclip and you cant miss it. There is
also dario's signature (the maker of the map) in crossfire, also
blue for some reason.

Off topic: has anyone noticed that if you pick up and exploding gas
barel and toss it with the grav gun up in the air, and then catch it
before it hits the ground and explodes, and then you merely drop it, it
explodes! Probalbly due to the wacky physics system valve has  .

if you have to noclip, then that is a gay secret.....not even a secret really....just a bonus for people who pointlessly open up deathmatch maps outside of a server to run around in and turn on noclip to see whats up.

OK...now that I am done ranting....I have to go check it out

Only had a run around quickly, but this is what stuck out like a sore thumb to me. Dead ends in dm are supposed to be a big no not only that they have gone and made one that takes ages to walk down. This is what I can see being the 1 big problem with steam, its so easy for them to release new stuff/updates that they are less inclined to bug test it.

My thoughts exactly....they had an update today already fixing a bug that allowed players to repeatadly set off the missle in dm_runoff. The public shouldn't have to beta test their maps!

Although I wouldn't complain if they came fourth to me with a certain next project....

freakin pointless dead ends.....weak.

Sorry to bump the thread, but it looks like the thing kinda went off-topic anyway.

A few places are listing the parameter as "-steamport <port>",
so presumably you can use whatever port you like. However, where the
hell does this parameter go? On the end of steam.exe or for a specific
game?

Ho ho ho, now Snarkpit finally realises what I've known for years... HL1 was a fluke good game, HL2 was s**te and Valve just got lucky.
