The only reason this happens, is because Windows Movie Maker
sucks. If you insist on using it instead of the Adobe Maker, then
try closing absolutely everything else except WMM.

What sort of audio file are you trying to import? I think WMM only
accepts wma, mp3, and wav, as well as possibly a few others. Also, try
importing the music through a menu rather than dragging it in.

Update your Movie Maker to 2.1. Fixed some rare crashes for me.

The rough cutting and pasting stuff goes fine in WMM, but those preset effects and fades usually suck.

Still, it's of the nicest additions to WinXP.

For good slideshows, I use a tool called "Photo Story". It's free for
Windows XP users. You can make a slideshow with music and effects, and
you can define paths for the camera to follow, so you can pan, zoom and
fly over your pictures. Pretty cool, really.

Like you said, for simple editing of my digital camera's videos, it does the trick.
