That inch to unit thing is misinformation.
For medium scale stuff, like your house, multiply the imperial measurement by 1.3 and you'll be closer.
That's why Valve sets their door textures at 112 when in reality a standard door jamb is 80-82.
It's when you start getting into large scale things that the engine shows its weaknesses, mainly its FOV distortion. Try making a football field or a large big-box store type of thing, it'll turn out to be way too large.. But for a house keep going with the 1.3 generalization

yea one of the oddites of the games is the units.
i believe you should only make things that are horizontal 1.3 times bigger and the verticles standard.
the setback is the player
ingame you are 72 units high and 32 units wide!!!
no matter what unit of measurment you use thats just wierd. that would mean that the player is almost 3 feet wide , thats sumo sized
