Well... I downloaded GTKRadiant 1.4.0 and created a "first room" with textures from a tutorial I found on the Internet. Then I went to the BSP menu and told it to compile my map, which it did. However, I've got no experience making Q3 maps so I just watched a lot of compiler output go by in wonder.

So here's a few questions:
I guess the Q3 map compiler is "q3map2". Does this one do everything in one - lighting, vis work, etc? Are there alternatives (e.g. a Zoner's type setup for Q3)?

q3map2 can do network compiles, yes?

My BSP menu has tons of settings - single, test, final, etc. Can I add my own? What settings produce good results? (Maybe I'm looking for a compile switches guide here).

I've got more questions but those are about textures so I'll start a new thread. Maybe.

EDIT: I'm in Linux. Keep that in mind if you want to recommend a compiler front-end.

I the Q3 compilers will work just fine, they're everything you'll need. (don't know any alternatives)

I don't think you can add settings, tho.

Q3Map2 is the alternative to Q3Map...

You can use a batch file to setup your own settings, but it's really not necessary, as the BSP menu pre-defined settings are already the best settings.

Don't think it can do net compiling.

Here's what each of the sets mean

(single)-only runs the specified process(eg. CSG, ViS, RAD etc...)

(Test)-This is for "quick" compiling for testing things ingame.

(final)-Basically you have to play with these two for the best results.
