We just had 55 guest people not logged in, looking over the site.
If only they would take a moment to log in, post something and drop kick us back into activity.
Oh well. ;(

The actual activity numbers are much less encouraging.

To be frank, a shit load of people traffic through the site. But the state of the forums is not something they like, apparently, and they are not participating.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

You think?

Oddly enough, I always thought that to change something to your liking, you actually have to be there participating.

My bad I guess.

Generally speaking, if people don't find something they like ... they're not going to bother.

It makes no sense to go around the web and look for communities and go, "Oh this one aspects is neat, but the forums are not so great ... I KNOW I'll join the forums and participate and invest hours of my time to help them out."

It just doesn't happen.

What's happening with the site right now is people are interested in the articles ... but not the people. To infer that's the problem of the people abstaining from posting in the forums ... is a little ridiculous.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

..... Sometimes your deductive reasoning just makes no sense what so ever Adam.
BUT, its your reasoning. Up till now, its never mattered before. Why change things now.

Who knows, you might just have a point.

Well, he does. I let him have a look at the database tables and site activity graphs from the the past couple of years, and he's speaking from stats.

It's true though; the site's longevity stems from the permanent content database we've built here. Of course, it didn't just happen, but that's where the value is for the many people visiting the site through stray Google searches or site hopping. A well written article is worth like 1000 threads in activity coinage.

The activity helps in the forums, but that only keeps those who are already 'sold' on our theme and content around for longer. The forum activity doesn't attract people here, the content and articles do.

Way back in 2001, not many sites like this existed, so the standards for activity were rather low. The people who were on, were those looking to relate with others and talk about what they were doing. The internet now has become more autonomous; and people know they shouldn't have to talk to anyone to get the facts and information they need. If it's not easily available, then it's not worth their time.

Those looking for a conversation or a review will inevitably stick around, activity makes that part of it last longer. But the autonomous Google searchers will care less about that in the long run. Produce articles and write reviews, I think that's the best medicine for us until the site gets updated to support new and better features.

Ya, MORE content is better; of course.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with encouraging more posts. We need more forum activity; that's for sure.

I think regarding the site stats, that in order for the forums and posts to matter as much as they used to for the random visitor, then further article development and review effort should be made.

Any [POSITIVE/CONSTRUCTIVE] activity is good activity :p

And Orph, I accidentally typed this in place of your last post (clicked the moderate button by accident). I placed an admin message there, if you want to rewrite it, I'm soo sorry. :scream:

No biggie. I think I made my point. I may not have convinced anyone but to me, it was perfectly clear.

I know I've said it before but I wish a thousand times I could have convinced Lep to diversify. I foretold this. He was convinced I was wrong. (as most of the kids here do)

Most people just don't understand how hard I fought for this place.

Plane is doing great, though I've not flown it in about 5 weeks now :( I gotta get back on that.

So, assuming no one is currently capable of shooting me (I hope!) I'll chance it by saying if my project idea is something the community is interested in, then maybe thats the kind of project that can kick start something.

Its not something that'll be made into a typical map, nor perhaps any game map. But its something I've been wanting to do for a very long time - I probably even once started it but cant remember. I've long been an avid fan of Titanic (the ship moreso than the movie) and I've always wondered what it would be like to walk it's decks. And Im sure Im not alone on that one.

So far as I can tell, there arent any publicly available computerized 3D tours of the ship and thats something I'd like to build, as best as possible to original scale, and according to original design. Not some writer's creativity, so to speak. Various blueprints can be found and Im working off of those. Frankly, just started last night, but its going to get there. Putting up the first pieces is always the hardest part to ensure all the measurements are correct. Going on the assumption from what I was able to dig up that 16 units is equal to 1 foot (12 inches)

So thats my project.

When a body sees pictures like that it makes our paltry stuff so pathetic.
Yes I enjoyed making my maps but sometimes I feel so... dirty? That's as good a word as any I suppose.

Well that does look awefully nice. Makes me a tad bit jealous. Kinda hoping he gets it done, you can see at times that the whole inside of the ship is empty because in some shots you see the water where ship should be.

If you can see water from the inside of the boat, perhaps he's shooting for authenticity?

Looks like a big modeling job to me. Mostly models if I'd concern myself with it. Add a phong and rim shader to everything, and find a way to bump the motion blur up a bit, and you'd have something just as pretty in Source me thinks.
