i dont see how no .res file would have any effect on whether hl can find a model. it's only used by a server to list what other resources go with the .bsp when clients need to download a new map. i'd guess that more probably you changed the pathnames to models/classic/modelname.mdl, at the same time as you made a res file, and blamed the wrong one for fixing the problem.
unless sven-coop uses .res files in some other way?
