I've heard that vvis and vrad support distributed compiling operations at sites like this, but has anyone heard of how to get that to actually work? I try adding the -mpi param and creating the files it says it's missing while putting what I think might go in them, but I can't get past C:\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\nanodeath@earthlink.net\sourcesdk\bin/dbinfo_vvis.txt i
s not a valid database info file.

I know this is a bit of a long shot, but has anyone heard ANYTHING about this or gotten to work? This would be so cool...Thanks.

I haven't looked into how this works yet. You might read my Netvis tutorial so you can see how distributed vis worked for HL1 That might lead you in the right direction. I don't know.

Thanks...unfortunately it doesn't really help here. Totally in the dark. I don't even know how to specify between server and client...all I know is that you at least need files dependency_info_vvis.txt and dbinfo_vvis.txt in with your vvis.exe file.

Should be interesting to figure this one out. Didn't think that the new
Hammer supported it. I've got three PC's here at home on a network -
surely would be nice to use all three for compiling

Hell yes it would  Got a desktop with an AMD 2500+ and a gig of RAM, and a laptop with a Intel 2.66GHz and half a gig. It would contribute something at least.

Ok, I fired off an email to the sdk department at valve...hopefully they'll have some comment on this.

Was the pun necessary?

Actually if I wasn't able to get the vvis tool working I'd be "Totally in the light"

(wow that was lame...I should stop talking  )

Just to utterly kill the joke, you'd actually be in neither, as even
without running VIS, RAD is quite happy to carry out direct lighting
calculations, just not bounces

Hehe, thanks for that...actually I didn't realize that vrad could run without vvis. Hadn't tried it. Interestingly though they have the -mpi option for vvis and vrad...but vrad actually goes relatively quickly for me so I wouldn't really need it.

Ok, bumping since I have this problem too - Anyone got distributed compiling to work for HL2? -mpi is the parameter, but as mentioned it needs some text files (probably containing ip addresses and so on) to work, and I cant find any tuts on the subject.

Alright, since no one on the face of the planet seems to know anything about this, I shot off an email to Yahn at Valve. Hopefully I'll get an answer soon.
