I remember when Maya 5 first came out you could buy it on Alias's site for a mere 7 grand. Simply Ridiculous

you saw this price tag? or heard of it?

i have heard of 200,000 dollar price tags, but never saw them. in fact, i was watching the Stargate SG1 special the other day, they called them "coasters" cause they no longer need them and are obsolete..
expensive coasters

Some of the software they use where I work (Siemens Industrial Turbochargers) is a little expensive...like ?30,000+ and that's not including the training courses on how to use them either!

I'm currently dealing with a request from the business to use a program called TecPlot which will end up costing over ?10,000.

Give me HL2 for ?20 any day

A few years ago I bought (rather, I made the purchase for the company I was working for) a RealServer licence for 100 streams and I believe it was $10,000. Ouch.

thats simply mind boggling..

/me wonders, are these products worth more, or have less competition to bring the prices down. when you think about it, gaming and games in general, prolly have as much time invested, and could be worth as much, but the make up for the price intake with volume sales.
50,000 games sold at 50 dollars a pop, would be worth more than 100 sales at 10,000 dollars each. what i mean is, you would have to have a market capable of selling 10,000 dollar programs to warrant the prices.

Only problem is that a lot of these more 'specialised' packages tend to be just that - and as such, need the higher cost in order to cover themselves. I can't imagine there being a large market for software that measures the gas emissions from a gas turbine etc.

Yeah, there sure are some expensive, highly specialized tools out
there. I'm told that the cell sorter at the research institute I
work at costs a cool half million, has software that costs about 100
grand, and hand to god: the damned thing sorts cells like its some
bizarre, microscopic kinko's.

Orph, they're meant for corperations, not individuals. Thus the different prices.

crono, i understand that, but feel its more their specialized nature than corporate destination.

corporations need specialized programs, individuals can get by with mass produced programs.

still, its price and demand. i bet if an individual person needed a specialized program, the price would still be as high as if it were destined for cooperate use eventually.
anywho's.... moving along

RenderMan (program that makes pixar films) I believe costs around 8,000, and I got it for free off of lime wire  hehe
