Why did they close down the old version so long before the new version is ready? It seems to me that if they leave it too long as a non-functioning website, people will kinda forget about it. Does anybody have any contact with Mustang and have any idea what is going on?

my guess would be that he was waiting for HL2 on sept 30, but when it slipped the release date he kinda gave up.

I should have offered an explanation for this earlier. Sorry I dropped the ball.
In short:
GlobalAssault is moving hosts. Hosting for GA was free. Over the years as the site grew bandwidth hit 30gb/month. This became an issue and they were going to pull the site. So, I snatched the database and all files and put up a splash page. I began researching new hosts and decided to do it myself. I have started a small web development company and have lined up some clients to help with the overhead when the new T-1 comes in. So I emptied my savings and built a datacenter sparing no expense. We are nearly complete and I am nailing down the firewall configuration (very secure) and the backup generator is on order.
GAv6 will be a whole new animal. Previous versions of GA were grown from a small review site supporting my gameserver. V6 is completely new supporting all game types (HL1 & HL2) as well as all MODs for each. A 'proper' structure for a large community site.
I have been up to my eyeballls doing all this on my own for the past few months but I am starting to get back into circulation. It is nice to get back on 'the pit' with like-minded HL gamers

wow, looking at all the features of the site, globalassault must cost Mustang a fortune! There doesn't seem to be any reason why it wouldn't work in Mozilla though.. at worst the drop down menus won't align properly, but that doesn't matter

So how come it redirects me to google when I use mozilla? I'm pretty sure if you let mozilla try and load the page it would work fine...

This is how rich you can be if you start up a map website and sell people's e-mail addresses  I'm planning on buying the Kinder Egg corporation myself.

No, really, how do you get the money for running the site? If it is out of your pocket that must be really tough.

It is out of my own pocket. However, now it is expensive and I am trying to devise methods of generating some revenue so I can still feed myself. I do not plan to make any cash - just need to cover expenses. I want the site to serve the community for free, but other revenue ideas are being researched. I will definately NEVER sell out to pop-up or huge banner ads. but a small sponsors section may be helpful in attracting advertising.
Originally I wanted have the site generate cash that I could return to the site members in the form of contest prizes etc. I thought it would be cool to have monthly (at least quarterly) mapping contest for 21" LCD Monitor's, Plazma TVs, or Dell XPS machines etc. If it ever starts making money that will be the first thing I will implement. I love contests and if the site gets enough members I could even approach Dell for freebies.
Anyway, the whole effort is "not-for-profit", I just need to keep it "not-for-bankrupt" also
