I made a map, and reloaded it. when i was exiting it asked if i wanted to save changes. little did i know it was asking me about the OLD version of the map.
Is there some sort of backup folder where old vmf's or hl2 sdk usable files are located once you save over it?

Look for a file in the same folder called mapname.vmx. It'll be an
older copy of the map. Rename it back to .vmf before loading, or Hammer
will complain.

Yeah, that's happened to me a couple of times.
Hammer usualy saves a vmx file at the same location as the vmf file. I
have checked and they seem to be a duplicate of each other. I don't
know what it serves for purpuse (backup maybe  )
Try opening your old vmx file and see if that might be it. I don't
think hammer has some kind of backup folder (if you dont make one and
maintain it yourself  )
Well, good luck!

Take this as a hint to backup your VMFs after every compile. They
take up almost no disc space anyway. After this, if something
horrible happens, you can always load up "Copy (12) of dm_leet.vmf".
Also, make frequent backups on a different disc. You wouldn't want a total HD failure to ruin the past month's work.
