I built a displacement around my entire map before I scale.. I go into
transform>scale XYZ are all .0625 and my displacements look way too
extended on the Y axis..

all of the faces that your displacements are made from are only in the xz plane, so nothing about them gets scaled on y. probably why the hammer docs say to make a copy of your map and scale the copy down to 1/16 and then build your skybox and displacements around that.

yep, you just learned the hard way. Displacements dont scale.

actually yes they do have a scaleing ability

1.click on the displacement you want to scale

2.open up the face edit tool

3.click on the displacements tab at the top

4.down where it says scale put in 0.0625

5. hit the APPLY key and then close the face edit window

and BAM knocked it down a notch
the only problem with steam updating things every week is it doesent give the developers an incentive to playtest thier work, so we do it for them

That isn't what he wants to do, he needs a 1:1 size displacment to
scale down to 1:16 for the skybox. All that does is move the
displacment plane in or out.

I did the same thing, built a lot of displacements around my map which took up an hour or 2 of time only to try to scale them down to 1/16 and get what you got. It sucks. Do what fishy said and scale your map to 1/16 and build around that.

what are you talking about i do it all the time when im making my skyboxes.

and from the looks of the picture that is what he needs

hmm... by scaling down an already built displacement map , wouldn't you
get much more polies than you need.. it sounds like a bad habit to me

no, not if you're using the scaled displacements in a skybox, because they would be scaled back up by the engine, and would look the same as they did to start with. apparently, there's something about this process that lessens the load on graphics rendering.

handy to know there's a way to scale them, but i'll stick with the method i described above, as it makes the placement a little easier.
